A few weeks since a stran
ger called at mío of the Tren-
ton stores and purchased some
gftóds to the amount of $3 25,
and, having deposited his coat
on a side counter when ho en-
tered tlje store, stepped over
to his coat and dragged it up
to him, and out of a huge poc-
ket brought forth a large size
shot sack (Hied to the top with
what the merchant supposed
to be either gold or silver.—
The customer untied his sack,
and to the astonishment of the
merchant lie poured out neith-
er gold or silver, but counted
out just 325 large, old-fash-
ioned copper cents, threw his
coat over his shoulder took
nis purchases and departed.—

Lobouchere, editor ofLon
don Truth, says of General
7 «/
Gordon: He has deliberately
obeved his instructions. With
wrong-headed obstinacy, in-
stead of retiring when he
could, he has remained at
Khíntoum, in order to force us
to send an annv, not to rescue
v
him, but to enable him to
take a bloody vengeance on
these who have dared to resi*t
bis will. I should bo sorry
were he killed, but. I see no
reason where he should risk
the life of one British soldier
in his bolmlf. If he be now in
danger, he owes this to his
ignorance that the first duty of
a soldier is to obev orders, and
• y
to his forgetting that when a
man undertakes to aet under
instructions, he should not
run counter to them.

THE AMERICAN GIRL.
The London W< rld*s pic-
ture of> tlie American girl,
civilized and uncivilized, has
caused great indignation among
Americans in Europe. The
former type is described as
always talking lou ily and al-
ways in haste; as_,having a
hearty appetite, and lots of
candy in her pocket, which
she eats at all hours She
leves to sit in a rocking chair
in the heat of the fire or the
snn, munching candy and
reading novels. Her feet are
said to be usually without an
iñstep; they are small, narrow
and flat, and owe all their
beauty to well fitting shoes,
The civilized girl, who has
seen Europe, holds her back
extraordinarily stiff, carries
her head very high, and skims
along the street like an im
portant little water wagtai .
she disowns and despises her
own country, and her solo
ambition is to get into soeie-
ty.—-Ex.

She was a very pretty girl,
tastefully dressed, and her
brown hair curled and rolled
about her low white forehead
in a way that was entrancing,
considering how hot the
weather was, and how many
fair locks that bad been curled

in church, too, and fans were
rattling in every seat. There
were lots of flics about, but
people seated in her immedato
vicinity were pleased to notice
that they all assembled and
hovered around the pretty girl,
and only the young man who
sat besides her was troubled
occasionally by the little pes-
terors that sl|e impitioutly
brushed from her face when
they bocame unbearably an-

country, being a native of the
old Granite state When he
came to this city Dr. Mott

took the place thus made
vacant. Ho {earned from Mott
how to charge. I well remem-
ber the time when the latter
removed a small tumor from
the nock of one of my friends.
The tumor was not larger than
a walnut, aud the operation
was done in less than five min-
utes, but the bill was $350.
Some skillful surgeons would
have done it just as well for
one tenth of that sum but,
Mott charged for his reputa-
tion, and that seems to he the
rule iu life.
