Hrownsvillo has now an opportu-
nity to secure this Ion# coveted im-
provement. The construction will
give employment to many persons.
A prominent gentleman abroad,
otters to construct for us an ellici-
ent system of water works to cost
not less than $20,000 if the city
will agree to take twenty-five hy-
drants, for ten years, at an annual
rental of $100 each. Let our tax-
pnyers unite in urging the city
council to enter into such a contract
and a step towards public improve-
ments, of great importance, will
have been taken. We arc assured
the council will act in the matter,
affirmatively, on notice of the
wishes of their constituents. No
time should be lost and wo hope
the matter will be uonsumated du-
ring the week.
Matamoros can date tho day of'
her decadence, to the one on which
the saie of the Matamoros Ar Mon-
terey RR. concession was made to
the'Valmer and Sullivan company.
It was executed in the belief that
this then rich corporation would
early finish the line, and place our
merchants in position to control
their share of the trade of northern
Mexico. Not only has the company
not complied with this, not only
have they built two competing
lines, which have commercially
ruined this section, but they have
also-failed in every obligation made
by them to the men from whom
they purchased the road. The line
built, valueless as it is, was con-
structed with the subsidy money,
and we also believe that the com-
i
pany has even drawn resources
from this, lino to be expended else-
where. We st'.y nothing of the
wastt'ully extravagant way in which
the work was done, that thing was
common wherever this company
had control, but we do not think,
that, after nearly four years of dilly-
dallying, tho government should
allow this company to further act
the part of a dog in the manger and
keep us from obtaining railroad
communication with both Camargó
and' Mier, towns by nature com-
mercially tributary to Matamoros.
The company we do not conceive
owns a dollar in that road, because
they have not put any capital in it,
does it not seem reasonable, under
the circumstances, that if this com-
pany cannot, or will not build this
line, that it bo forced to vacate, and
some association, that will complete
the road, be allowed to take its
place.
KIKE PROTECTION.
Tho action of our young men, on
Saturday evening, in forming and
organizing a fire company, is cor
tainly a move in the right direction.
Because of the depression of the
times and lack of prospects for any
immediate development of the re
sources about us, our city would be
nearly ruinod by an extensive tiro

An efficient system of water

would amount to many hundreds

Franco has done her part; the statue
is completed and will soon be on its
way to our shores where it will forever
stand an emblnm of the liberty achieved
by tho United States, aided by France,
over one hundred years ago. This great
work has been accomplished by France
appealing to tho patriotism of her peo-
ple, which has resulted in this colossal
gilt to the United States. •
How eminently iitting. therefore that
the masses in this country should have
an opportuity to assist in tho erection
of a pedestal to receive it.
It will be erected in common by the
two nations associated in this brotherly
work.
It is truly gratifying to learn, as we
do from the committee, that the sub-

every part of the country for tho min-
iature statuettes which are being sent
to each person who subscribes 81.Ot),
proving that appeals to tho patriotism
of our people are never made in vain.
