Thbatbioal —The coming week will be
made famous by the reappearance of Mrs.
Dr. Cole on the stage. Our citizens all know
that she is not exoelled In the higher walks
of light comedy by any lady in Amerloa.
The round of characters selected for the com-

appear as Marco, in the Marble Heart.

five minutes ndf—a carriage is provided—of
the terminus of the railroad, thero has been
erected a fine bath bouse, and that for a rea-

suits,aud all tbeneoessary toilet arrangements

Who «oiild have looked for such progress
on the broad highway to total depravity!
But a few mouths ago the moral people of
Houston put a broad veto ou a proposed
" hop." Iu ull that holy city there should be
neither ball uor hop. No wild youth should
even dream of suoh a play an "hop, skip and
jump." Tho fame and tho glory that we pre-
dicted for Houstou has all hided and vanished
us the dew of the niorniug. It is all owing to
the ship chauuel ; the pride ot prospective
wealth aud glory lias turned the hearts, if uot
the heads of Honatoninns. Wbrn Houston
was content to be a rural village, she excelled
iu homely virtue ; but with the first vision of
a ship chanucl, she has backslidden and fallen
from grace, and gono to the dogs. The
ship channel has driven off all virtuous
aspirations. Unhappy Houston! thrice fallen
from thy virtuous abstinence. A stronghold
aud defence of the faith has surrendered to
the goddess Terpsiohore.

Philip th* Btcora, or Spain : By Charles
Oayarre ; Author of "The History of Lonis-
ianaWith an introductory letter by
Qeorge Banoroft, and a fiue steel portrait of
" Philip " «rom the Titian picture engraved
by Burt.,
To speak against a book by Charlie Gayarre,
is tfbason to Louisiana. While we have not
bad an opportunity of reading " Philip the
Seoond," wo know that Mr. Prescott spoke of
it thns:
"Mr. Gayarro has claims upon us of old.
He is the author of a history of Louisiana,
which is the fruit of thorough research, and
takes a very high rank among the best histo-
ries of the several States. His present work
(Philip 11.1 is written with care aud vivaoity,
with a mind superior U> the influences of su-
perstition, and compissisnsive in the study of
the oauses and con equonces of even's. He
h&s a quick eye for the pioturesqus, and a
rupid movement in his narrative, which, if
sometimes too highly ornamented, is never
languid, and be portrays the social and politi-
cal tendencies ol the reign which he de-
scribes."
A work thus commended needs no further
certificate.
Coninoton's Translation or the -Uneid or
Viboil. 1 VoL oloth, 8vo.
A translation qf the ASueid of Virgil, render-
ed into English octosyllsbio verse, which was
8o much in request—for example, in Soott's
"Marmion," Byron'a "Giaour.", and Moore's
"Fireworshippers," by'tlie Bar. John Coning-
ton, Corpus professor of LAtin in the Univer-
sity ofDubliu. When translations like this
are at hand, it seetns almost like folly to de-
vote years to the study of the classio poets in
the original. This translation preserves not
only the meaning of the original, but in a re-
markable degree retulus its form and sem-
blanoe. These may be tpvpd at Mason's, where
also we see fiue, and much coveted editions
of Poe's proso tales and poems, and also of
"Algers Future Life," « standard work with
theological and o; her ttudeuts, whose tastes
lead them to the stndj of the soul and the
doctrines pertaining to it.
TIIE DIFIUHBNCKS. '
The London corresptpdcnt of the Times,
writing of the Fenians,, says : " If one Fen-
ian is hanged, of all convicted and sentenced,
I shall be very much reappointed. English-
men do not ask it. Tbe only advocates tor
severity I know of nte Irishmen." It is a
fact that the bitterest foes a man has are
those of hit owl houis/tyd. Wo notice that
the' bitterest BadiuiiMStt men oi Southern
birth, or, at least of loijg Southern residence.
These are they that canfót " bate rebels and
rebellion half enough." There is not half the
bitterness of feeling toward confederates by
Northern loyalists that there is manifested by
many Southern loyalists. Every writer fa-
miliar with the sentiments of the people
coufirms this statement. On tho other hand,
tlio rebels, duriug tha. war, treated Southern
loyalists with a severity fur inore intenso than
that they manifested jor Noithern men. Wo
should all endeavor to rid ourselves of this
prejudice, look at the matter with calmness,
and endeavor to love most where our liutred
has been tho most intense.
Reconstruction in Now Orleans, iu a finan-
oinl aspect at least, bus progressed very satis-
factorily to the rebel loaders. It is said that
tho First National Bauk of that city, which
lias recaní ly stumbled into difficulties, has
Beauregard's uote for forty thousand dollars,
and has lent him seventy-two thousand for
which it lias not even his note to show. It
lias au account against Dick Taylor, ulso, for
thirty-seven thousand dollars. It does not
appear that any loyul msn has been trusted
by this bank, its favors being Reserved for
rebel chieft.—Detroit J'ost.
We don't think the National Bank of Louisi-
ana exhibited a very great deal of wisdom in
trusting these Confederate Generals so much,
but then tbe last sentenco is utterly untrue,
unless tho Post denies the loyalty of Thomas
P. May, A. S. Mansfield and General Frnuk
J. Herrón, of the Federal army. Stick to the
fuats. ^
Mr. Sumner propoies to extend tbe benefits
of the free school system to our brethren of
tbe Esquimaux persuasion iu tbe great North-
west.— Gin. Timé .
We wish lie would extend tbe benefits of
free schools to his brethren of the Texas per-
suasion—-good schools, paid or free, are among
our most imperative rants'.
