Law C'aiid.—Wo take grunt pleasure
in culling attention to the professional
card of our young and talented friend,
Richard V. Conk, published ill to-day's
paper. Mr. Cook is located in the
fi>tiir¡áhin£ town of Colnmbtis nnd con-
venient to the wealthy counties of Fay-
ette, Brazoria, Austin, Fort Bend, Mat-
agorda and Wharton, in all of which, to
gethcr with Colorado county, liin place
of residence, lie designs to pursue his
practice. Those having law business to
transact, could not do better th.tn to en-
irust it to bin management.
Kit Cahion.—There is no name, pri
bably in the American I'nion, more
sugKestivo of romance nnd wild in-
cident, than that of tlio celebrated Kit
Carson, llis career as it trapper, bis
adventures with Fremont and the perils
to which lie has been exposed generally,
amid the boundless solitudes of the
western wilds, have formed nil interest-
ing staple of conversation throughout
the country. This history, with ninny
other ne\V books just received, may be
found at Baker <fc Smyth's literary em
porium and Drug store, on Pecan
street.
Ilr. Stím.IíIvks.--In our last issue,
wo published a paragraph from a letter
to Col. Tarleton, containing the partic-
ulars of an accident to .Judge Ochiltree
and a statement, of the critical condi-
tion of the latter, occasioned by the up
setting of his buggy and its descent into
the water from a crazy bridge. We
«re glnd to leant from the Harris n
Flag that the Judge is freo from all
<iat ger, with wind and limb perfectly
sound. The bridge nnd buggy were
considerably damaged, but. the old vete
ran politician, not a whit. Nothing
short of forked lightning will take the
Judge to Canaan's happy land, until
Ins time comes.
Major Gnuimi.Es and Family Back
Again.— It will be recollected by the
citizens of Austin that our old friend
Major Grumbles, long a resident ol
Travis county and dome ninety years
of age, induced by the persttasioas of
his good lady, a native of Scotland, paid
a visit last summer to "the land o' cakes
and brithur Scots," for the purpose of
spending the evening of their days amid
the associations that cluster around the
memory of Wallace uml of Bruce. On
Friday morning's stage, they returned
'tgain to the city of Austin, well satis
fled to cement anew the old ties of friend-
ship which bound litem to this locality
and to remain with us, until called ' to
thatbourne whence no traveler returns."
Wo extend to them a cordial welcome
and wish them long and happy days in
the laud.
A Young Cashmkre Buck.—One of
General Hamilton's Cashmere Goats,
recently imported into Texas, nnd near-
ly of puro blood, gave birth a few days
ago, to a young btick. The mother was
in cxcellcnL condition, and the young
one is rapidly thriving. As a suitable
tiame for tlio juvenile long wool off
spring of ancestors that came from
"tlio vnlo of Cashmere," wc would sug-
gest that of the able editor of the Hous-
ton Telegraph ; especially if it is desi-
rable that tlio little fellow should ac-
quire á.facility for wading " In deep
water."
Fatal Rencontre at Skcvin.—A let-
ter, as we are informed, to young Mr.
Pitts, contains intelligence of a fatal
■Muting in tlio street* of Segniu, be-
tween a Mr. Toms and a Mr. Ewing,
armed with revolver#, in wliicli tlw for-

Comvpondenco of ilie lutilligen* «r.
Dallas, April 18th, 185 -.
Mb. Kditor : I notice, with *oine puiu-
I'ul reflections, the note I addressed you
on the Otli inst., informing you of the
death of our highly esteemed fellow-cit-
izen, Hon, J. W. Latimer, editor of the
Dallas Herald. This note was very has-
tily and awkwardly written—the stage
wus at the door, the driver calling for
the until, the pout-master wus standing
by my sido with tin envelope tvndy to
enclose my letter, and the deputy was
holding the mouth of the mail bag open
to receive it. Knowing your partiality
lor the dtfceased, I only designed, at the
earliest moment, to inform you of the
melancholy fact, and had no time to se-
lect words or finish sentences, and as
little expectation that you would ihscrt
tliu note in your paper. Besides the
want of sentiment, the last two senten-
ces are blended, and there is a lapse in
words that destroys the scone.
'I lie death of Judge Latimer wus very
sudden, and produced a great sensation
in this community. In common with nil
who knew him, I had great respect for
his talents and virtues ; its an intimate
friend and companion, I believed him to
be without an equal in honrtr, integrity,
and devotion to his friends and country.
So much talent, generosity and virtue
has rarely, if ever, been combined in one
individual. Although young, hisjuilg
incut was so ripe that he seldom com-
mitted an error. He was a philosopher
of high endowments, and eveiy depart-
ment of science must feel the effects ol
a severed link at the dissolution of J.
W. Latimer.
'• Whom the fjods live d'e yottng.''
This community felt, and appreciated
the worth of Judge Latimer as an en-
terprising and intellectual citizen, and
Would mourn his loss us a cslamity
that ti.ey could scarcely hope to sur
vive, but his social qualities anil uuso
phisticMted intercoiii'se, marked by so
' ' luul ingrafted him in their
uflections, and they wept over hi« bier
as a relation, fa her than a friend.
The Masonic Lodge was convened on
the next day, (Thursday, the "tli,J at
ten o'clock, lor the purpose of making
arrangements fur the interment. Ai
the hour appointed tho hull wus crowd
ed, and the stoutest hearts quailed", and
tin? strongest frames quivered in expec-
tation of the words that should express
the object of the meeting, and with tlie
effort to suppress the emotion of grief,
that so powerfully swelled every bosom
N'o tongue was found able to give ut-
terance to the words ; the attempt, was
sufficient ; the partition v.nil between
manly pride and natural affection gave
way, nnd tears burning wiih eloquent
grief flowed front every eye.
The next day was n arked by the
sanie pi'ofuiiiid evidences of sorrow, on-
ly heightened by the extent of a large
public assembly. The coffin containing
the body Was conveyed in Masonic pro-
cession to tlio court-house, where, the
solemn funeral ceremonies of that order
were con inenced, uml eulogies pronoun-
ced by Hev'd .JaUfts A. Smith and Col.
M. T. Johnson, lint nothing that these
distinguished gentlemen could say, told
with so much effect the virtues of him
.whose memory and remains they honor-
ed, as the noble tears they found it im-
possible to retrain Such indiscrimin-
ate grief has seldom l een witnessed,—
livery cheek Was wet, or eye suffused,
with tears during the whole ceremony;
"and often both sexe< and ull ages wept
without restraint
Judge Latimer knew but little of his
importance, or how much he was be-
loved. Unostentatious nnd nmiablo in
his disposition to a fault, lie had no vain
ambition to gratify. It wi s kis nature
to be engaged in something useful, and
he applied himself to his purpose, con-
scious of no offensive design, without
looking abroad for approval, or fearing
rebukn front any quarter. Such is the
transitory nature o! all things subitum
