the less obligi d to you Ibr this token of your
remembrance, for one who rejoices with
heartfelt joy iu the hope that the action of
Congress will ere long, if not now, bo ac-

I should have been happy to join you in
tho manifestations of regard for your dis-
tinguished lellow-citizen Mr. Clay, whose
Ibrincr and recent services in the cause of
his country command him to the respect
and lo the gratitude of his countrymen. I
witnessed his exertions during tho past ses-

dictated by tho highest patriotism, and dis-
play ing talents and energy worthy of the
best days of his power, and which will ever
place his name high un the roll of public
benefactors.
We have passed through n Icarlul crisis;
indeed, wo are yet passing through it—for
there are elements of trouble in operation,
both in the North and in the South, which,
if not wisely dealt with hy man, and mer-
cifully overruled by Providence, may yet
rend asunder this confederacy, leaving its
fragmcnta n„ ono onii toll whore; but nil
can tell that they will be memorable proofs
in after-time?) ns similar examples of na-
tional folly havo been in times that preced-
ed us, how easily human blessings, tho
highest indeed alter the religion of God,
arc sacrificed to human passions, ns well by
communities ns by individuals. While re-
joicing with you, and every lover of his

that our business is with tho present nnd
the future, nml not w^li the past—or with
the past only so fir as we can deduce from
it useful lessons of experience. Wo enn
only hope to lienl our internnl dissensions
by bonds of kindness nnd conciliation; by
a strict determination to adhere to Ihe pro-
visions and tn the true objects of the con-
stitution—that law which is high enough
for 1111 American citizen in the regulation
ol his rights and duties; nnd by n spirit of
mutual reward, ready to concede ns well as
tn demand, when soelionnl questions arise,
with nn common umpire hi.t the patriotism
of tho country. F rtunntely, iu tho rc-
cent adjustment, no triumph lins been at-
tained, no pride of character has been
wounded; nnd this is n« true n e.nttso of re-
joining ns the adjustment itself; nnd when-
ever we cmne together to interchange con-
gratulations upon the result, if we do so in
that enlarged spirit of patriotism which
looks to culi ns well as nil, thanking tlio
