MARSHALL
SPRINGS.
rf^hese Springs re situated five miles from town,
1 North of V\ est, in a mountainous range of
country, about two thousand feet above the common
surface ; being the dividinj: ridge between Lit.le Cy-
press and Sabine Rivers, anil sufficiently far from eith-
er not to be under the influence ol the miasmata that
emanates therefrom; and further protected'by a gir-
dle. of pine growth, the best protector known in the
vegetable kingdom against the diffusion of miasma-
la over countries near its source. These hills are
but some of the rare specimens of wonder and ad-
miration left by the Great Hand, who made all things
perfect.
On the highest point we have building sites, un-
tpassed in beauty by any in the known world 5
and the eye pauses not only there, but with delight
and admiration can survey at will, a diversify of land-
scape, from twenty, to thirty miles in almost every
direction.
From the sides of these hills issue a variety of
water, to which we invite the attention of the public,
as analyzed by Professors Riddel 1 & Smith as fol-

Gentlemen—Assisted, by Prof. J. Law ence
Smith, who has great reputation as an analytical
chemist, I have examined the thre§samples of min-
eral water, sent me from .Marshall,Texas, bv W.
H Dial.
Concerning the gasssous substances, (such as car-
bonic and sulphurated hydrogen,) which may preg-
nate Ihp recent spring waters, so much time had
elapsed, ara it being to us uncertain whether the
bottles were sealed 2t ontí? at the springs, that no-
thing satisfactory could be Ascertained.
The three bottles of water contains but little sa-
line or solid matter, no oneof them containing over
six grains, (6 grs.) to the quart.
Tne water In bottle No. 1 contains sulphate 01'
magnesia; sulphate of soda, (purgative;) chloride
of sodium, (atonic;) sulphate of lime, (a tonic;)
irganic matter.
The water in bottle No, 2 contains sulphate of so-
da ; súblumate of magnesia, (a tonic:) sulphate of
lime; organic matter.v
'1 he water in the small bottle without a number,
contains sulphate of lime ; --sulphate of magnesia-
Chloride of sodium; organic matter.
In enumerating the ingredients aforesaid of the
three samples of water, they are set down in the or-
der of their re ative abundance. Thus, in the last
there is more sulphate of lim > and less chloride op
Sodium than sulphate of Magnesia.
These waters ar-- probably aperient and alterative
and the gasseons matters present may give to then
additional medicinal value.
Respectfully, vonr ob't seM,

In connexion with the above, we might offer tin
certificates of several who have attended the Sprint's
hut we deem it unnecessary as we are satisfied thn'
the efficacy of the water, on a fair trial, will be ap
parent. But we will say that a 1 agree that, the>«
waters are the most active diaretic tliey e* er used
and thus, undoubtedly good for Affections of the

Feeling confident, from the medicinal virtue of
these waters, the height of its locality, the protec
tion afforded by the girdle ef Pine timber, that ful
and complete satisfaction will b3 realized by the In-
alid; thus we can safely recommend it to the afflic-
ted and distressed. Here also th.i poet and lover o
romance will find an ample field for the range of hK
immagination.
The proprietors having purchased the springs late
in the season, together with the inconvenience of ob
taining materials, will not be able this season to of-
fer the public further accommodations than the rent
of neat and comfortable cabins. They will have ten
cabins completed by the twentieth of June* and hav-
ing implicit confidence in the virtue of the water,
will continue their improvnnents, and by the next
season will be able to have evpry convenience re-
