PROSPECTUS
or the
TEXAS LITERARY JOURNAL.
WE propose to publish a monthly peri-
od cul. to be called "The Texas Lit-
era ry Journal." Each number will con-
tain sixty pages of reading matter ; the
binding printing, and matter to be of the
first wder. Price. $2 50 if paid in advance
and §¡3 00 unless paid within three months.
The tir.-t number to be issued about the 1st
of February next. 'I he Journal is to be
purely Literary—entirely neutral, both on
Religion and Polities. Our enterprise may
be better understood by statin": that Special
attention Will be given to the following iui
port ant object*:
First—The best manner of organizing
schools and colleges ; the best modes of in-
struction and good discipline, and the best
text books for Texas. It is believed that the
present system of education is not practical
enough for the growing wants of Texas, and
of this progressive age. Our system of dis-
cipline. too, is sadly defective—else why are
so many seminaries of learning "seminaries
of vice 1" and why do so many students re-
turn home to pierce parental hearts with
woe? Our Stale, too. is flooded with text
books wliich only enrich the publishers, rob
parents, and pon (use teachers and pupil. W
desire, by concentrating the wisdom of the
various instructors of the State, to pour
Hood of light on all these points.
Second—Texas is a vast and rich field for
scientific research ; as yet, however, it is un-
explored it i.sterra incognita. Its Geology
when fully explored, will not only be full o
interest to scientific men, but will add im-
mense wealth to the State. The department
of Geology, as well as Botany. Zoology. Min-
eralogy. and Ornithology, will receive special
attention.
Third—Historical. The Journal will em-
body the most thrilling events ql the early
days and noble struggles of Tcxian heroes.
111 order to incite the riaing generation tt
patriotism aud noble deeds. We are making
arrangements to secure some of the ablest
writers of the Slate in this department.
The Journal, though edited by. Professors
in Baylor University, is not the organ ol
any Institution, but is intended to lie a velii
c e of communication for all Teachers and
friends of learning in Texas; md also a bond
of Union to cement more iuti naiely ail wh
¡ re engaged ill the great and noble enterprise
of instructing Youth. Hence, all Teacher.-
and Professors are solicited to contribute
or cur pages, and any Teacher «r Minister
ol the Gospel sending us four cash subscri-
bers shall receive a copy gratis.
