Obituaries from The Southwestern Advocate 1939
Mrs. E. A. Drew, wife of Rev. E. A. Drew (pastor in Ladonia), died on October 12, 1939. She is
survived by her husband, two daughters and two sons. The funeral was held at the Ladonia
Methodist Church on October 13, 1939. Burial was at Greenville, Texas.
Dr. J. W. Johnson, pastor of First Methodist Church in Newman, Georgia died in the pulpit
October 8, 1939, near the end of his sermon. He was 65 years of age. Surviving are his wife,
Mrs. Eva Howell Johnson, a daughter, Mrs. Samuel B. Kirby, Louisville, Kentucky; two sons, J.
W. Johnson, Ft. Worth; H. McCoy Johnson, Newman, Georgia; two brothers, Rev. T. H.
Johnson, Langdale, Alabama.; and S. A. Johnson, Hartselle, Alabama. The funeral was held at
Newman, and burial in Atlanta.
Ezra Fudge head of the Southwestern Advocate, died on October 7, 1939. He is survived by his
wife.
October 26, 1939
Rev. David F. Fuller died at the age of 92 on October 17, 1939, at the Dallas Methodist
Hospital. He was a Methodist preacher for 73 years, a Confederate soldier and a native of
Georgia. He is survived by 2 sons, R. E. Fuller of Phoenix, Arizona; and E. F. Fuller of Grand
Prairie, Texas. Funeral services were held in Grand Prairie, where he made his home.
Mrs. J. R. Cole, Jr., of Tulsa, Oklahoma died on September 25, 1939. She is survived by her
husband.
Rev. Henry G. Hawkins died in his home in Canton, Texas, on October 13, 1939. He is
survived by a sister, Mrs. J. J. Golden of Dallas, Texas, and other family.
Walter B. Wilson of McKinney, Texas, died in October, 1939.
November 2, 1939
Mrs. J. E. Vernor's funeral was held at the Methodist Church in Lampasas, Texas, on October
24, 1939. Mrs. Vernor is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. W. Mills, another daughter from San
Angelo, and five sons. She is preceded in death by her husband.
She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Tucker.
November 16, 1939
Mrs. Mary Margaret Hawkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heil Smith, was born on January 17,
1866, near Oxford, Lafayette, County, Mississippi. She married Milton Hawkins on February
14,1889. She died on August, 20, 1939 at her home in De Leon. Mr. Hawkins died on April 12.
1915. Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins had seven children. One son, Jesse, died on October 25, 1910.
Services were held at the De Leon Methodist church on August 21, 1939. Interment was in the
De Leon Cemetery, next to her husband and son.
Survivors include 6 of their children, Mrs. Arthur Duke, Los Angeles; Howard Hawkins,
Lubbock; Buford Hawkins, Gladewater; Mrs. Leslie Bruner, Ft. Worth; Nathan Hawkins,
