• Body discovered in well
believed to be homicide victim
Investigation is continuing
into the discovery Sunday of a
badly decomposed body found in
an abandoned well north of Rio
Grande City in the La Sagunada
area, with the Sheriffs
Department expressing the belief
that homicide was the cause of
death.
The body was extricated from
the well after a lengthy effort b)
a rescue team of firefighter
from ihe Mission and Edinburg
Fire Departments.
The body was discovered
shortly before noon Sunday by a

"We're considering this a
homicide case. The victim had

death. The body had been
submerged in water and was
extremely decomposed."

know who the person might
be," explained Fuentes. "Also,
we don't know the
circumstances that led to the
death...At this point, we don't
know it the person was male or
female."
The lieutenant declared,
"We're hoping we can have a
positive identification of the
person, through DNA testing,
within six to eight weeks." He
noted that "personal items were
found in the well with the

During a campaign stop
Monday morning at the Starr
County Campus of South Texas
Community College (STC),
Texas Governor Rick Perry
touted his record on educational
issues and economic growth as
reasons why Texas voters should
re-elect him to another four-year
term on Nov. 7.
Gov. Perry, accompanied by
his wife, Anita, made a brief
appearance shortly after 10 a.m.
at the Student Services Center of
South Texas Community
College in Rio Grande City.
Starr County Republican
Party Chairman Benito Trevino
led off the event by declaring, "I
thank STC for allowing us to
have this historic event on this
beautiful campus."
Trevino then introduced public
officials that were present,
including Precinct One County
Commissioner Jaime Alvarez
and Rio Grande City Mayor
Kevin Hiles. He then introduced
hi> sister Isabel Trevino, who is
a candidate for the 381st District
Judge position in the Nov. 7
election
Isabel Trevino emphasized.
"I'm very proud to be asked to
introduce a lady who has been an
inspiration to us all. She has
been extremely dedicated to
women's issues. It takes a
special person to become
involved in ihe health care
profession."
Trevino added, "She (Mrs.
Perry) has 17 years experience in
nursing, including surgery and
emergency care. She cares about
the whole person, physically and
emotionally. She is the leader of
immunization efforts in Texas
and is a leader nationally in
immunization advocacy."
Trevino concluded, "She is a
leader in the effort to improve
reading among children in
Texas."
Texas First Lady Anita Perry
commented, "That was a
wonderful introduction. This is a
wonderful outpouring of
support...This man is serious
about Texas and its future. He is
a conservative Texan who will
continue to lead our state down
the path of prosperity. 1 trust

County soaked by heavy
rains over weekend
Heavy rains Friday afternoon
and Sunday night brought more
than four inches of moisture to
many parts of the immediate
Rio Grande City area.
Moderate rain started falling in
the Rio Grande City area shortly
after 2 p.m. Friday, but ceased
relatively quickly. Shortly after
5 p.m. Friday, a thunderstorm
cell arrived in Rio Grande City
from the west and dropped over
three inches of rain in less than
an hour in some areas, causing
high water on many streets
After a relatively dry Saturday
and a Sunday that had been
completely rain-free, another
thunderstorm ceil moved into
the Rio Grande City area from
the south at roughly 8:30 p.m.
and dropped between I and 2
inches of rain in roughly 40 to
45 minutes.
On Friday night. Oct. 13,
KRGV-Channel Five reported
that 3.5 inches had fallen in the

determined at the autopsy."
He indicated, "The Sheriff's
Department was alerted at
approximately noon on Sunday.
Oct. 15 that a deceased person
was found inside a weil on a
ranch in the La Sagunada area
roughly eight miles north of
Rio Grande City."
Fuentes added, "A family
looking for a missing relative
who vanished roughly two
weeks ago discovered the body
inside an old abandoned well.
The body was 25 feet deep inside
the well...The well may date
back to the late I800's or early
1900's."
About the extrication effort.
Fuentes explained, "It took
about three hours for them (the
rescue team) to get set up and
recover the remains. Once they
were set up and sent the
firefighter down the well, it took
about 30 minutes to extricate
the body."
"This extrication was carried
out in a joint effort by a rescue

Color Night set Friday for
return of Pee Wee football
Mark your calendars! It's
official, there's another game in
town and Color Night is set for
6:00 p.m on Friday, October 20,
2006 at the Football Field
behind Rio Grande City High

Pee Wee Football is coming
home to Rio Grande City. After
a 23-vear absence of the sport,
the Community Action Council
of South Texas (CACST) will
sponsor Pee Wee Football as a
chartered member of American
Youth Football. Inc., the
nation's largest youth football
and cheer organization.
"The community has pulled
together to make this comeback
a reality. A major player with
the CACST on this venture was
the Rio Grande City
Consolidated Independent
School District (RGCCISD) that
supported the development of
CACST's Rio YouthPlex Sports
Academy Program," stated Juan
M. Cantu, Director of
Operations for the CACST. The
City of Rio Grande City as well
as several community businesses
and individuals have also
financially supported this

Cantu continued, "We could
not have done this without the
volunteer coaches who
responded to our call for help
and of course the parents who
encouraged and supported their
children's dream of playing
tackle football."
Three hundred and twenty
(320) children comprising
twelve teams of 4th, 5th, and 6th

we hope will be an enthusiastic
