THE majority of children who
become croupy have a benign ca*

ncss and some cough, to an alarm-
ing stridor orcrow on inspiration
which usually occurs during the
night' and is very alarmiiur to
parents.
. It is well that they should be
alarmed, because the early mild
condition may run into a much
more serious acute laryngefradi-
citis. The mild condition is usually
relieved by ipecac, moist air in-
halations and a hot pack. When
these simple remedies do not stop
the spasm, hoarseness or croupy
condition, it is likely to be a swell-
ing of the membrane of the ehilcl's
trachea or wind pipe, which re-
quires very skillful medical and
nursing care.
In other times, before the diph-
theria prevention campaign in
fictiool children got under way,
these severe croupy stridor cocdi*
tions were usually due to diph-
theria. Diptheria should always
be thought of fcven yet, although it
is now an anachronism, almost a
thing of the past.
Condition May Be Serious
But there ta a form
flammation of the larynx and
trachea in children not due to diph
theria which may be ver.y serious
and even fatal. The germ which
causes it is a form of streptococ-
cus. The respiratory distress is
caused by the same sort of condi-
tion that causes diphtheritic croup,
namely swelling and obstruction of
the upper respiratory passages so
that the child gets its breath with
great difficulty/
"No doctor,'' states one who has
had a world of experience, "who

object of treatment la to
keep the respiratory passages open
until the acute inflammation sub-
sides. Danger la from asphyxia
caused by obetruetioit In the glot-
tis. The hot, moist inhalations, th?
anti-spasmodic drugs and the hot
packs are all designed to further
the relaxation of the respiratcry
passage.
Modern Methods
Modern methods of laryngology
have added an improvement by al-
lowing the doctor tp suck up re-
tained secretions from around the
larynx and the trachea. We all
used to hear stories in the diph-
theria days of the mother or the
nurse who sucked the mucous from
the child'* throat and saved its
life. This modern bronchoscope-
suction Is a scientific adaptation of
the o|d fashioned practice., ,
"Croup" used to mean diphthe-
ria. Diphtheria is now nearly a
thing of the past But remember,
parents, there is a form of croup
still, not diphtheritic in nature but
equally dangerous, and when youi
child, in the course of a chest cold,
begins to have difficulty in getting
his breath with crowing Inspira-
tion, stridor and croupy cough, call
all the medical consultation you
can get.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
M. K. D.:—"Is the use of grain
alcohol if apy benefit in the treat-
ment of acne?"
swer: Alcohol will dissolve
grease and fat and of course an
acne skin is greasy. This seems
to me the only benefit that would
come from ita use as you describe
it.
