Freshmen Baseball Prospects
Loom Large; Win Practice Game

Led by ace pitcher Dick Floyd from Freeport and slick-
fielding catcher Duane Deane from Bay City, Rice Owlet base-
ball team seems to have a real ball club this seasoh&PThey began
their season last Monday by defeating the Austin Maroons of
Austin 8-4 in a practice game,
product, pitched the entire nine
innings for Rice.
The frosh have an A-l mound
staff this season, led by Floyd and
Roach. Other pitching prospects are
curve-bailer Sid Jones from Aus-
tin of Houston and fire-balling La-
don Cox of Galena Park. Floyd;
who as an architectural student can
practice only twice a week, has a
wide assortment of pitches includ-
ing a hopping fast ball and a sharp
breaking curve. Roach is best
known for his snapping fast pitch.
Rice's only other catcher is hefty
Lavon Cox, Ladon's twin brother.
The two made an extremely effec-
tive brother battery at Galena
Park last year, and they hope to do
so again. In the event of both
Deane and Cox being hurt, big
George Wilson 6'" 5" first baseman
plate.
Frosh infielders besides Wilson
Claude Roach, a San Jacinto
are "pinky" Nesbit, first base; tar-
ry Lundstedt, Jed Dunigan, Charlie
Page Rogers, second base and
shortstop; and Tom Pearce third
base. Outfielders are speedy Don
Costa, St. Thomas ace, who per
formed well in' a Houston amateur
league during the summer, blond
Garland Fielder, slugging Lamar-
ex, Ladon Cbx and Claude Roach
when the yaren't pitching, Jed
Shaw R.E. Wort ham, and Robert
Harrison. ".
