The Choice of Teachers
I am very vitally interested
in the kind of teachers which
are to be chosen for the schools
in arid around Caddo Mills.
They can either be the preachers
best helpers or worst hinderera.
If they do not render a positive
senri«e to the church life of a
community, they are a positive
hinderance.
The parent has the first and
grsatsst opportunity with a child.
Inheritancies and first impres-
sions concerning the things of
life are given by the parents.
But next to these comes the
preacher and school teacher with
a close rivalry for the place of
chief importance with many
things to the decided advantage
of the teacher. They ought to
have the child most of the time
from seven to twenty-two.
Habits are formed, characters
made, and destinies settled dur-
ing this period. It is the storm
and stress period when they
need the tender hand of a chris-
tian teacher to guide them. In
fhis psr^od fully 95 per cent of
the people decide their destiny,
ihsy either become servants of
t}od or slaves to themselves.
The above facts make it a
very important duty which we
impose on school teachers. The
on® essential qualification which
should be applied in all cades is
the teachers motive. Mental
qualifications are necessary. A
good life is important, but the
first queston I would ask is
/ "why are you teaching?". If
the applicant wants the position
for the dollars involved or be-
cause he wants to be employed,
I would very promptly dismiss
him and look for some one else.
Money is what Judas wanted
when he betrayed Christ. Such
an applicant would consider his
obligation discharged when
school hours were over and pap
ers were graded, he would go to
an adjoining community or to
his home on Friday evening and
be back in time to ring the bell
on Monday morning.
But the applicant who looks
upon his position as a calling
upon will use many afternoon
opportunities for a long cdnfi-
i deatal talk on life work and
motive of which the other would
never dream.
He would als9 spend the Sun-
day in the Sunday School and
other religious works of the
community where he was em-
ployed. He would be deeply
interested and assist in every
good work for the upbuilding of
the community. This man see's
the great responsibility involved.
The other see's what the silver
will buy.
I would much rather hare
poor teaching and good living
wian good teaching and poor
living. Character is what we
are after rather than dates and
fiMtf.
With all due respect for any-
one involved I beg to remain a
fnead to both patron and
Wacher. R. N. Huckabee.

The News Inaugurates today one
of the greateit voting contest!
ever held in this section of the
State, and one which we believe
will arouse a great deal of in-
terest.
This contest will extend over a
period of 90 days, and at the
close some lady in our vicinity
will be the proud possesser of a
handsome $400 piano.
In this issue of the News will
be found a full explanation of
the contest, with the rules
which will govern It, and a list
of beautiful and useful auxiiliary
prizes which will be given by a
number of the most progressive
merchants of the city. There
are a great number of prizes
besides the piano, any one of
which will be well worth win-
ning and every contestant who
gets out and hustles will be sure
of winning a handsome prise,
even if she does not win the
piano.
This eon test is put under the
auspices of the Publisher's
Music Company of Chicago, who
will have charge of the arrange-
ments. This company makes a
business of conducting these
popular Voting contests and at
