(says a writer In Appleton's Jour-

tion of hitman or celestial beings
into plants or trees, is so beautiful
as that one in which the North
American Indians give the origin
of their maize, which is, in sub-
stance, that a beautiful girl, pur-
sued by a river god, took refuge
the reeds, twining them
fdwut her to hide herself, upon
which tor slender form* was
changed into a graceful stalk, her
teeth into milk-white kernels, and
her lovely floating hair into silk;
and in place of reeds and maiden
there stood only a tall, bending
gtalk of Indian com; so that ever
after in the rustle of a waving
corn field the red man could hear
the stirring of a company of timid
girls.

The Paris Woineii.
Heinrioh Heine thus wittily
catalogues and describes the
charms of the Paris women: I am
their greatest adorer, admiring
them tar more because of their
faults than their virtues. I know
of nothing more appropriate thah
the old legend which tells us that
the women of Paris are at their
birth endowed with every imagin-
able fault, but that a friendly
fairy, taking mercy on them, lends
to every fault a spell which con-
verts it into a new charm. And this
friendly fairy is Grace itself. Are
the Parisian women beautiful?
Who knows f Who can penetrate
through all the artifices of the
toilet ? Who can decipher wheth-
er that which tulle suggests be
real, or that which padded silk
parades be false ? And even when
the eye has succeeded in piercing
the shell, and we are ' about to ex-
amine the kernel, it. deftly en-
velopes itself in a new shell, and
then again in a newer one, thus
by the incessant change of fash-
ions mocking man's acnteness.
Are their faces pretty 1 This, too,
it would be difficult to determine,
for every feature- is in constant
motion. Every Parisienne has a
thousand faces, each one of which
is more laughing, more intelligent,
more charming than the othei,
greatly embarrassing him who
wishes to decide which is the
most beautiful, or which, in fact, is
the real face. Are their eyes large ?
What do I know? One- does not
spend much time investigating the
calibre of a cannon when the ball
knocks his head off. And he who
is not struck by their eyes, is at
all dazzled by their fire, and is
glad enough safely to remain bey-
ond their range. Is the space be-
tween the nose and the mouth
broad or narrow ? Sometimes it
is broad, as when they turn up
their noses: sometimes it is nar-
row, as when they proudly curl
the lip. Is the mouth large or
small? Who can tell where the
lips end mid the angle begins t In
order to reach a correct decision,
the investigator as well as the ol^ect
of the investigation should be in a
state Qf perfect quiet. But who
can keep ^ quiet when Witt a
Parisienne? and what Parisienne
is ever quiet? There are those
who imagine they coukl closely ex-
amine a butterfly, if they only had
it pinned last to a sheet ot paper.
But that were both foolish and
crneL The quiescent, pinioned in-
sect is no longer a butterfly. A
butterfly should only be seen when
it flutters among the flowers; and
the women of Paris should be seen,
not in their households, were they
seem like so many butterflies fas-
tened by a pin which pierces the
heart—but in the salon, at balls
and soirees, where, under spark-
ling crystal chandeliers, they flut-
ter by with their embroidered
wings of silk and gauze. In such
moments they reveal an eager love
of life, a willingness to plunge into
sweet stupor, a thirstiug fpr sen-
suous indulgence that invest them
with au almost terribly beauty,
and a charm that both delights
and shocks the soul. ;;* f rf
Kentucky has 5390 manufac-
turing establishments within her
territory, making her rank in this
respect? as the fifteenth State in
the Union. In point of numbers
employed in such establishments
she is the sixteenth, having 30,63.5
hands. Her manufactures amount-
ed in I860 to $54,625,809, in which
she ranks as the seventeenth
State. In 1860 Kentucky was the
twelfth State in number of estab-
lishments, the sixteenth in num-
ber of hands employed, and the
fifteenth iirtlie value of products.
It is interesting to notice a man
of tender corns on a croquet
ground. He will stand around,
always in the way, until some
sunny-haired maiden croquets on
his pet toe, and then he will throw
the mallet wildly among the play-
ers and go waltzing off on one leg
among the shrubbery, choking
himself black in the face with ex-
clamations he dare not utter, while
the maiden will smile serenely and
murmur: "Oh, Mr. F , I did
