Houston is now only twenty
hours from Shreveport, La.; three
days from St. Louis, Mo.; four days
from New York. She will be a
shipping port in time. Now, how-
I ever, capitalists can travel over
her vast territory, and purchase
corn,-wheat or cotton, and make
such satisfactory arrangemen ts for
direct shipment, without expense
of handling «c hauling, that per-
centage formerly paid for those
things will accumulate into profits
made; and Texas raised cotton,
kept intact, is always a few mills
in advance of other States. Be-
sides, our piney woods in the
neighborhood of Jefferson and
Longview must ultimately form a
profitable article of traffic, as well
as corn and wheat. Texas is a
world in? itself. The wintery desola-
tion that sweeps from venturesome
settlers of the west their savings
for years is unknown in our State.
We have the sunny clime of Italy,
the humidity of the Bhine, and
the wintry blasts of the North, but
we are free from the volcanic
throes that upset the people who
f reside in other less iavored sec-
1 turns. The focilitigg. for-railroad
travel are now great. It would

is warm, tiiey can get up steam,
and go ahead to a ©eider clime.
When cold, they can order the en-
gineer to get nearer the tropics,
and thus enjoy perpetual sunshine.
Happiness is in the heart, and can
not be bought, but change of scene,
which is often times substituted
for happiness, is within the reach
of any educated man who has
t~ money to buy the time of men who
know how to use and control the
elements.

The President shook hands with
Loke, and it being then half-past
seven, a motion was made that
they adjourn to the Mayor's office,
where their friends were in coun-
cil, and they there would have an
opportunity of studying parlia-
mentary rules, so that' hereafter
their meetings would be conducted
with the decorum that character-
ized that five-dollar-a-meeting
body, i •" \ l/f:
When they reached, Dr. Weiner
was on the floor, and in stento-
rian tones he ordered them to
make less noise.
A. Loafer, Esq., the President
of the clnb, took his seat in the
alley near Loke, and handed the
following petition to one of the
Aldermen, who sent it up by the
Health Officer to the desk of the
Secretary and Treasurer, when it
was read, running as follows :
" That the sum of ten thousand
dollars is bonds be appropriated
out of any money not yet pocketed
to pay for a toothpick for the Mar-
ket Alderman* which toothpick is
now in possession of Tetter
Schmidt." ^
Considerable discussion arose
on this petition, and the Market
Alderman looked askance. At
last his majestic brow was lifted
from over his eyes, and he saw
Loafer, who, with mouth wide
open, was waiting to explain.
Privilege being granted, he
stated the city had the beginning
of a Museum in the shape of an
elephant, (the Market-house;} the
elephant had a keeper (the chair-
man of Market Committee) and he
thought as this toothpick was fish-
ed out Of the bayou, and was from
the proboscis of a swordfish which
was strange in these parts, and
was seven feet long on base, six
inches in circumference with a
point of one-fourth inch, it might
as weill have it as the second con-
tribution. The Council regretted
their inability to spare the cash,
as they wanted to raise the salary
of the City Attorney, but they
would refer the matter to a special
committee, with power to act.
Committee to be elected.
The club then retired by the
alley, amidst cries of 11 order,"
"putthem out," "sitdown,*ete.;
after their exit, they adjourned,
and the Council proceeded with its
regular business in its usual order-
ly and dignified maimer.

To have seen the visage of

His shriveled face was drawn up,
and hisblay lips had turned as
white as an African's teeth. He
peered into DeGaultie's capacious
vest pocket, as if searching for the
unbaried bones of that baby; and
then slunk back, treading upon
Lake's corns, almost upsetting
him, and displacing his stovepipe,
winch fell into the mud, and got
badly damaged. Loke was mad.
He sold if the crowd would grant
him time he would imbibe
another lemonade, and repeat a
few verse she had composed, when
with his true love at Brenham,
that he thought would describe
Scrabbled condition—morally and
physically. Consent being granted
and a ring formed, Loke, with his
dented hat standing on his cane,
gulped out:

, I assure you, Messrs. Edi-

uppermost in this very pleasant
assemblage, and I am very sure
the Republican party of Texas
will get cleansed and rejuvenated
if similar meetings are held and
similar sentiments expressed, as
werehere last Satnrday night, all
over the State where Republicans
do congregate. Some parties are
trying to circulate rumors that
Governor Davis did sell the bonds
at a very good pace, and that he
brings the money with him. I
believe no such thing; the people
North have no more faith m the
Administration than the people at

be unsaleable were it not that the
