Mr. Coke in ShmtSTiUe.
KtnSTSTJTLLE, Nov. 10, >73.
-Governor, Coke arrived
a late hour on Satur-
day night, and was met at the
depot by quite a nnmber of
prominent citizens of the town,
who gave him a cordial welcome.
Atcr & short serenade by the
band, Mr. Coke was conducted
to a carriage and driven to the
residence of JDr. W. A. Eawlings,
whose guest he has been dur-
ing the stay of JUro days. The
Sunday was spent quietly, the
next Governor of Texas attend-
ing service with the family of
Mr. RawKligs. ^
This morning, the numbers of
well-dressed people ' upon t
streets, tfie immbers coming into
town by all the avenues leading
to it,told us that something be-
yond the usual rotine was to

The crowds increased
about three o'clock when
Coke, accompanied by Mr. 0.
Hollingsworth, memberiof the
late Legislature. arrived afc-thd
Conrt-hostfe, the appointed pace
for the speaking. - ^
- One thing j&as very notice-
able about this gathering,
and that was, it was
almost "Wholly made np' o:
tbe best citizens of • the county—
men and? women whom yotinever

bob-tailed Radical crowds—men
who -only come-out from their
homes to hear speakers oil the
issues of the State political ;C*BP>
vass, who bring with them, not
the fumes Of the grog-shop, but
respectability and thorough, ear-
nest and intelligent thought and
iation. Such a crowd met
3oke and gave him a royal
welcome to-day, and Jjmt whole
action tells us feat they will give
their efforts towards his Section,
which is here readily conceded.
Mr. Hollingsworth was the
first speaker of the day, intro-
ducing Mr. Coke in quite a
lengthy discussion of the present
issues. Mr. H. is a very fair
speaker, and few men are moi%
thoroughly acquainted with the
merits ,and demerits of the case
which is now before the people
of Texas. *
Mr. Coke followed him in
a lengthy speech. He is only
of tiae
present as it is and will act as
t&Sfc present demands. . The

people have been* iri *> ■- stft# of

thei coming of a general election
upon a fair, basfi, this thraldom
and servitude has ceased, and
men are thinking freer. ' Under
the Radical rule inaugurated im-
mediately after the war, whieh
placed the voting power in
the unscrupulous * haads of
the" Radical clique, the bet
ter men of the State felt
and all that efforts to change
^ere futile. . Now, when all .this
has changed, and the fairer op-
portunities of the coming elec-
tions is offered, a new lifeaad
effort has takerf hold off ;th«he
true people, and they will use it.
'This is plainly evident, from the
interest they are taken in the
canvass, and preparations for
the coming ejections* These

passed pleasantly. On the outer
edge of the crowd we noticed a
few Kadicals of small stamp, and
it was very evident from their
looks atrthis crowd of good and
reliable citizens that they deemed
their case rather mixed. There

After the speakers closed, Mr.

It happened to be one of the
few gala days enjoyed by those

anniversary of the opening of
the new dining-room, erected by
the Lessees for the comfort of
the convicts. The

That they are succeeding admir-

visit there at the present time.
I do not know that I should
mar this letter by stating that,
after the courthouse had been
cleared of the respectable peo-
ple who had gathered to hear
Mr. Coke, the Iwb-tailed Radical
crowd, headed by Paymaster
« Pat Monroe," and Mr. H. God-
din, took possession and went
speechmaking. Uo, not bl
making either, for neither
Monroe nor Goddin can make
a speech, in political times, for
the lack of truth and honesty, but
they endeavored to convince the
colored men that fact was not

had proceeded them. This lasted 1

the preparations for the Coke
