—The spring dog-lights, under
the supervision, of Professor
Donovan, opened on Thursday
morning. The initial event, in
the classic vicinity of the coffee
house was numerously attended,
by the "boysand we are glad
to learn that while "innocent
amusvineut was not interfered
with, the morality of the per-
formance was strictly maintain-
ed." No arrests.
—Gen. Gaines has returned
from an extended visit to Young
county, and is looking well, al-
though he occasionally expe-
riences some of the effects of
of the arsenic he "look in" some-
time since. It is whispered
around that this district may be
so. fortunate as to be represented
in the legislative balls of the
Stfte by the General, on and
after the next election.
—The • strains of a genuine
Scotch - bagpipe, operated by a
genuine son of Scotia—a brother
of the Rev Mr. Brown's—woke
the echos of Jacksb^ro the other
evening—and called to our riiind
the time when we were shut up
in Lucknow and heard the "slo-
gan of the highlanders"' march-
ing to our rescue. That is, we
weien't exactly there ourselves
but we imagined we were,

the editor of this paper has
given rise to serious apprehen
sions among his friends, as he
wat* known to have a very large
sum of money in his possession,
(one patron having paid three
months subscription in advance
on the eve of his departure), and
unless he>hould "show tip" very
soon, an organized effort will be
made to ascertain his where-
abouts.
We had prepared an elab
orate and exhaustive leader on
the silver bill, but when it was
completed we found we were in
such a fearful muddle over the
financial situation, that we carna
to the conclusion that neither
onrself nor any one else could
make either head or tail of our
article-; and We deserve the
thanks of an appreciative pub
lie for refraining from inflicting
it on them;
—The Right Rev. Bishop Gar-
rett, of the Episcopal Church,
preached two magnificent ser,-
mons in the Presbyterian Church
last Sunday, the evening dis-
course on the theory of the res
urecrion being a wonderful effort.
The church was crowded on
both occasions, and the impres-
sive choral service of that chuich
was well rendered by Mrs. Mc-
Connell and Dr. and Mrs. Yeo-
mans. The Bishop left for Fort
Sill on Monday morning, having
had a special invitation to go
there from Gen. Davidson and
the other Officers at the garrison.
