Help for Haiti
Cedar Creek man to send supplies
BY TERRY HAGERTY
Assistant Editor
A Cedar Creek man
is reaching out to help
the victims of the recent
earthquake in Haiti.
Dr. D.D. Faye, a native
of Senegal, a U.S. citizen
and a professional ento-
mologist who has worked
with i nternational aid
organizations, is sending
boxed medical supplies to
Haiti.
On Monday, Faye
stood in a storeroom on
his Cedar Creek property
and said, "I have a room
full of new medical sup-
plies, mainly I.V. and
other blood work accesso-
ries. This shipment was
ntended for Africa, but
the lack of funds to send
them now precludes such
efforts. We thought that
it would do more good at
this time to redirect this
support to the most needy
at this time - Haiti."
Faye is one of the board
members of the non-profit
Africa Bound Corporation
that helps African nations
in need and fosters inter-
action with the U.S.
"Our mission is to link
Africa and the U.S in
mutually beneficial ways
leading to income creation,
health betterment, educa-
tion, and environmental
stewardship," Faye said.
Faye has been work-
ing on getting his medical
materials to Haiti.
"We contacted Living
Water International in
Houston who does a lot
of humanitarian/evange-
lism work in developing
countries by drilling wells
and spreading the Chris-
tian gospel," Faye said.
"They had a plan to go to

utting loose at open mike ni^ ;ht
BY TERRY HAGERTY
Assistant Editor
You know the feeling
when a band is "cooking."
It's a break between
songs when one of the
band members, in an ad-
venturesome mood, picks
a few notes of a song he or
she wants the rest of the
band to cut loose on, next,
without much further
prompting.
If they like it, they go.
If not, well, that's okay
too.
Such was the case on a
recent Wednesday night
at a newly formed "open
mike" session at the Old
Frontier in Paige, just off
of U.S. 290.
Local musician Jimmy
Watts was trying to entice
the rest of the revolving
band to pick up and run
with a cover of Tom Petty
and The Hearbreakers
"Breakdown," a jazzy sort
of rock song.
The band had a spir-
ited go of it for awhile,
but not everybody knew
the song.
"That's the fun of open
mikes," said veteran mu-
sician Jeff Kimey. "It gets
people out that want to
get opportunities to show
what they can do, even if
everybody doesn't know
the song. It's also good if
you are looking for a play-

CRIME
olice seek help
in area mug 2 in;
BY TERRY HAGERTY
Assistant Editor
Bastrop Police
would like the pub-
lic's help in solving an
armed robbery that oc-
curred at an apartment
complex a few blocks
from the county court-
house.
On Jan. 4 at about 7
p.m., a man was walk-
ing back to his residence
at the Stockade Apart-
ments on Emile Street
when two men grabbed
him and demanded
money, Assistant Chief
Matt Wagner said.
When the man said he
didn't have any money,
the other men allegedy
beat him up with the butt
of a gun.
"The victim had three
gashes in his head and re-
quired six staples," Wag-
ner said. He was taken
to Lakeside Hospital for
treatment and released.
A weapon was fired,
apparently at the ground,
during the attempted rob-
bery, Wagner said. Police
recovered a .38 caliber
shell casing. Also, one of
the men reportedly had a
pellet gun.
