Bluebonnets now in season at library
Every year Texans look for-
ward to the first bluebonnets
that mark the arrival of spring.
We at the library are no different
except our bluebonnets are the
Texas Bluebonnet Books.
Bluebonnet books are 20
titles nominated by teachers,
students and parents and select-
ed by librarians to encourage
Texas children to read more
books, explore a variety of cur-
rent books, develop powers of
discrimination and identify their
favorite books. The books are
both fiction and non-fiction and
are selected for children in
grades three through six.
Part of the fun of the
Bluebonnet list is that the chil-
MICKEY
DUVALL
dren actually get to vote for the
winner of the Bluebonnet Award.
They do not have to read the
whole list. Once they have read
five books they are eligible to
vote. Children in schools all over
Texas vote in December and
January for the Bluebonnet
Award Winner for that year.
The 2009 Bluebonnet Books
offered a wide variety of topics to
Interest just about everyone.
There was "Alvin Ho: Allergic to
Girls, School, and other Scary
Things" by Lenore Look about a
young boy who is afraid of just
about everything, loves super-
heroes (and is secretly
Firecracker Man), tries very
hard to be a gentleman like his
dad and never, never, never, ever
talks at school.
Kadir Nelson's book "We Are
the Ship" is a beautifully illus-
trated story of the Negro
Baseball League and the gifted
athletes who overcame segrega-
tion, hatred, and terrible condi-
tions to do the one thing they
loved the most, play baseball.
"Where I Live" by Eileen Spinelli
uses verse and illustrations to
chronicle the life of Diana, a
young girl who faces many
changes when her father loses
his job and the family must
move. For kids who love magic
and mystery "The Hound of
Rowan", book one of the Tapestry
series by Henry H. Neff, finds
our hero in danger because of
skills he never knew he pos-
sessed. He and the others like
him must hone their skills and
save the world from the dark-
ness before it is too late.
A more light-hearted offering
is "What to do about Alice?"by
Barbara Kerley. In this book we
follow Alice Roosevelt, daughter
of President Teddy Roosevelt, as
she frustrates her father and
those around her by pushing the
boundaries of "good girl" behav-
ior. If you are ready for an
extraordinary adventure read
"Savvy by Ingrid Law. Mibs is
about to become a teenager,
scary enough, but add in the
prospect of discovering her
savvy, her special one of a kind
gift that will change her life for-
ever, and this becomes a thrilling
and outrageous tale.
The Winner of the
Bluebonnet Award will be
announced early in February
and the new 2010 Books will
arrive any day.
Historical trail will be
the subject of meeting
The Bastrop County Historical Society
will feature local historian Kay Wesson at
their January meeting. Wesson will pres-
ent an informative session on "The King's
Highway - El Camino Real de los Tejas
from the 1600s to 2010, The arteries that
kept Texas alive" at the Kerr Center on
Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
In 2004, legislation introduced by
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and
Representative Giro Rodriguez passed the
U.S. Congress leading to the designation
of El Camino Real de los Tejas as a
National Historic Trail. The reason for the
designation as a historic trail starts with
more than 300 years of travel between the
Spanish colonists in Mexico and the
French settlements along the Sabine
River.
The Trail Association (El Camino Real
de los Tejas) was organized a few years
later under the guidance of the Texas
Historical Commission. This group has
been charged with developing a plan to
introduce visitors to the oldest travel
route in Texas and to provide information
about both historical and modern day
point of interest along El Camino Real de
los Tejas.
The trail is administered by the
National Parks Service and the manage-
ment plan for the Trail has just been com-
pleted and will be available at the end of
January.
Wesson's talk will include a brief his-
tory of the trail, Information about cur-
rent happenings and plans, and end with
what individual historic groups can do
with the trail. Wesson has been serving on
the board of directors of El Camino Real
de los Tejas since 2005, first as a director
from the Brazos Region and now as an at-
large director.
She is also very active with the Texas
Daughters of the American Revolution
(DAR), particularly with the rededication
of markers.

Threads of life
Suzy Seed, a Sulky educator from Houston, presented a recent program at a ColoradoValley
Quiit Guild meeting in La Grange on Quilting Your Quilt with Sulky Threads. Seed modeled
many of her quilted garments like the one she is wearing as she explained how to make even
the most difficult of the fancy threads behave when used on home sewing machines or quilt-
ing machines. She also showed various sized quilts demonstrating how to use "fancy"
threads to the best advantage.
