Voters and candidates have big stakes
in March 4th Primary Election

Early voting ends tomorrow in Tex-
as' Tuesday, March 4, Republican and
Democratic Party primaries, which
have lived up to their billing as impor-
tant and hotly contested races both lo-
cally and statewide.
With both Presidential Democratic
candidates Barak Obama and Hillary
Clinton vying for their piece of the
delegate pie, many local voters have
been torn because the local races for
Hemphill County Sheriff and Pre-
cinct 3 Commissioner will be decided
in the Republican Primary. Sheriff
Gary Henderson is seeking re-election
against a challenger, Jay Moseley, who
is a former Deputy and served under
both Henderson and his predecessor,
Sheriff Dean Butcher.
Precinct 3 County Commissioner
John Ramp
John Ramp, who is running for his
fifth and final term of office is facing
a challenge from Mark Meek, director
and former chairman of the Hemphill
County Underground Water Conser-
vation District board.
Hemphill County/District Clerk
Brenda Perrin reported a continuing
big turnout for early voting with 187
Republican Primary ballots cast and
26 Democratic.
Both Hemphill County Chairmen—
Bret Begert for the Democratic Party
and Mike Rollins for the Republi-
cans—are also seeking re-election and
are unopposed.
The 31st District Attorney Lynn
Switzer, is seeking her second full
term of office and County Attorney Ty
Sparks seeks his third term. County
Tax Assessor/Collector Debbie Ford
is running for her second full term and
Precinct 1 County Commissioner Joe
Schaef is seeking his fifth.
Incumbent U.S. Congressman Mac
Thornberry of Clarendon is unopposed
in his bid for the Republican Party
nomination, but will face the presump-
tive Democratic nominee, Roger James
Waun of Wichita Falls, in the general
election.
Both 31st District Senator Kel Se-
liger of Amarillo and District 88 Rep-
resentative Warren Chisum of Pampa
are unopposed in their bids for the Re-
publican Party nomination, and have
drawn no Democratic challengers.
There are contested races for U.S.
Senator, Texas Railroad Commission-
er and two seats on the Texas Supreme

Early ballots may be cast tomor-
row, the last day of early voting, for ei-
ther the Democratic or Republican pri-
mary in District/County Clerk Brenda
Perrin's office at the Hemphill County
Courthouse. Office hours are 8 a.m.-12
p.m. and 1-5 p.m.

party chairs have consolidated polling
places for the election.
