Highway 60 and Highway 60-b: Road crews finished tying steel and began pouring concrete in
this area of Highway 60 near the TxDOT maintenance building Wednesday morning. The work
is part of a project to resurface and correct grade on the highway from the city limits to the inter-
section with Main Street. Eventually, new sidewalks and lighting will be also be installed in an
effort to improve pedestrian access from Canadians downtown area to the walking bridge north
of town.
Work will resume in earnest on Main
Street either at the end of this week or early
next week when crews begin placing hot mix,
building curb and gutter and pouring and
stamping the red concrete on blocks 5 and
6—the last two-block section of the street-
scape project.
TxDOT Area Engineer Kenny Corse said
he is working this week with Xcel Energy
crews to mark pole locations and install ser-
vice connects for illumination along Main. As
soon as the final two blocks are paved, "we
will back up and start attacking the sidewalk
areas," Corse said.
That phase of the project will involve saw-
cutting and removing concrete from adjacent
buildings. The strip of concrete closest to the
building will be removed by hand to avoid
structural damage, Corse said, then the side-
walks will be formed up and poured in what
are expected to be one-block increments. The
only revision to that plan Corse anticipates
would be in blocks 2-4, on which the north
side is relatively easy to complete. On the
south side of those blocks, the grade differen-
tials are much greater and will require more
time to complete.
Corse said he expects the work will begin
at the highway and proceed uphill. "I under-
stand there are issues about getting access
at the courthouse," he said, "but by the same
token, blocks 2-3 have been living with con-
struction for a longer period of time than
blocks 5-6. We want to progress methodically
so we're treating everyone equally."
Though progress has slowed on Main for
two weeks while contractors finished other
projects, work on U.S. 60 is proceeding
qu ickly. At midweek, contractor J. Lee Mill: ■
gan's crews were forming and tying steel in
anticipation of pouring the second round of
concrete pavement in front of the TxDOT
maintenance building on Wednesday. One
pour has already been completed north of the
Canadian Inn. Each pour requires a 4-7 day
cure before that barrier rail can be relocated
and the work zone can be opened up to traffic,
Corse said.
The contractor has asked to open up an-
other work zone, he added, "but I'm holding
ground until the job is progressing the way
I'd like for it to. No additional areas will be
opened up until then."
Grade-reduction work on the hill near
Animal Health and Nutrition will probably
not begin until the first week in December,
Corse said.

Main: The final two blocks of the Main Streetscape project have been graded and are readyfor hot
mix either tomorrow [Friday] or early next week, followed by curb and gutter construction and
pouring and stamping the red concrete that has already changed the appearance of downtown
Canadian. WCTU Christmas Bazaar planners had hoped to host the much-anticipated annual
event in its traditional location this year, but have agreed—due to the uncertainty of the construc-
tion schedule and weather-related delays—to move it to the Methodist Church.
