The Texas Wesleyan
women's soccer team went
into their game against the
Northwood Knights Oct. 12
knowing a victory would
keep them unbeaten in con-
ference and give them a sig-
nificant boost in obtaining
first position in the confer-
ence going into the playoffs.
Events did not go as
planned for the Lady Rams.
Although Wesleyan
appeared to outplay their
opponents, creating more
chances and dominating,
they left Northwood with a
3-2 loss.
The Lady Rams outshot
their opponents 20-4, but
failed to find the back of the
net as often as their oppo-
nents. Of North wood's four
shots, all but one found the
back of the Wesleyan goal.
Northwood opened the
scoring early on. A free kick
on the edge of the box was
drilled into the Wesleyan
goal by Debora Valeri to
give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Rams
responded in true fighting
spirit and brought the scores
level with 28 minutes
remaining in the half by way
of sophomore Loren Clarke.
Clarke dribbled through the
Knights defenders before
unleashing a shot past the
goalkeeper.
The Knights regained
control of the game scoring
Rams, and they continued to
create chances in front of
their opponent's goal.
Unfortunately for the Lady
Rams, they could not find
the back of the net.

their second goal seven min-
utes before halftime to give
them a 2-1 advantage going
into the half. And Loren
Clarke once again drew the
game level when she scored
off a pass from freshman
Brianna McKernon midway
through the second half.
This goal lifted the Lady
dealt a killer blow to the
Lady Rams' chances of a
first place Red River
Conference ranking when
Emily Matthews managed to
squeeze the ball into the
Lady Rams goal to make the
final score 3-2.
Coach Steve Jones was
disappointed with the loss.
"We dominated this
game, but our own mistakes
killed us," he said.
With the Lady Rams
looking to make up for their
previous defeat to
Northwood, they showed a
lot of passion and determina-
tion to overcome the
Drovers of the University of
Science & Arts at Martin
Field Oct. 15. The Drovers
came into the game looking
to clinch a regional ranking
but were denied by the Lady
Rams.
The Lady Rams con-
trolled the game right from
the start and took the lead 10
minutes before halftime
when midfield freshman
Danielle Parks registered
her first goal of the season
off a solid strike into the
bottom corner of the Drover
goal. The goal was assisted
by freshman Shannah
Bohon.
The Lady Rams contin-
ued to press their opponent's
defense but could not
increase the lead before the
half.
The second half saw
similar Lady Rams domina-
tion. Senior Nicole
Richardson secured the win
five minutes into the second
half when her fine strike

Lady Rams defeat two conference
rivals, break record in process

The Texas Wesleyan Lady Rams volleyball team took
two matches from two conference rivals over the Oct. 15
weekend and made a little mark on the history books as
well.
The Lady Rams won their 15th consecutive match, as
they topped conference rival UT-Permian Basin 3-0. by
scores of 30-27, 30-22 and 30-21.
The Lady Rams (17-3, 10-0 RRAC) built up an eight-
point lead at 19-11 and looked to have the game well in
hand. The Lady Rams seemed to falter a bit. and the
Falcons came charging back and pulled to within two
points to bring the score to 29-27. Wesleyan then regained
composure and closed the game out 30-27.
In game two, the Lady Rams jumped out to an early
12-4 lead. A timeout called by the Falcons seemed to stall
the Lady Rams' game for a Hit, but they would eventually
build up a 25-15 lead.
The Falcons then killed another rally with a timeout
and came within four points of tying the Lady Rams 26-22,
courtesy of a 7-1 run. Once again, Wesleyan regained their
focus and closed out game two with four unanswered
points and won 30-22.
Game three seemed to be a bit of a breeze for the Lady
Rams, leading by as many as 11 points. Sophomore out-
sidc-hitter Sandra Ayala recorded two aces in the game at
14-8, and junior outsidc-hitter Misty Tarbet provided kills
in the final game as the Lady Rams cruised to a 30-21 win.
"We played as a whole team tonight," said coach Rick
Johansen. "Everyone did their job well. This is the first
team I've coached that thinks like I do. They play every
point all out."
On Oct. 15, the Lady Rams made school history as they
outplayed the College of the Southwest Mustangs en route
to their 45th consecutive win. This broke the previous
record of 44 straight games set by last year's squad.
In game one. the Rams combined great hitting, a serv-
ice ace, outstanding blocking and all-around "hustle

TABLE TENNIS

STAFF WRITER
The Texas Wesleyan
University table tennis team
was in action this past week-
end, competing in two sepa-
rate events at the Sid
Richardson Gymnasium.
Out of an amazing field
of 66 players from around the
region, the Rams' Eric
Owens, Ludovic Gombos
and Carlos Chiu placed first,
second and fourth, respec-
tively, at the Second Annual
Texas Wesleyan University
Fall Open on Oct. 16.
In an exciting final
match, senior Eric Owens
defeated his new teammate,
Gombos, a Romanian-born
freshman, 4-1 (11-7, 11-9, 9-
11, 11-4, 12-10). For third
and fourth place, Tuan-Anh
Tran of Austin, Texas,
recorded a win over Chiu, a
freshman, by default.
According to Chiu, he was
unable to play the match due
to leg cramps.
The source of Chiu's
cramps may have been from
his excruciating match
against Owens, as Owens
won a long-winded 4-1
match (8-11, 12-10, 11-2, 11-
8, 11-9). Gombos' match
over Tran was even longer,
as he pulled out the victory 4-
3(6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-
6, 5-11, 11-4). The duel con-
sisted of 123 points over
seven games.
But that was definitely
not the longest match of the
day. That award goes to
Rams' junior Dinko Kranjac
and Chiu in their opening
round robin game. Chiu
squeezed out the win 4-3(11-
4, 9-11, 12-10, 30-32, 10-12.
11-8, 14-12) and, according
to the Rams' Peter Lindsay-
van der Puije, the match took
nearly two hours to finish.
An incredible 186 points
were hotly contested. The
Rams are in the process of
contacting USA Table Tennis
and the International Table
Tennis Federation on
whether or not the
Kranjac/Chiu match qualifies
for any national or interna-
tional records.
Sophomore Abdul Khan,
the only Rams' varsity player
not eligible for the champi-
onship class, won the Class
A title 4-2(11-7, 9-11,9-11,
11-8, 11-8, 11 -9) over Lifeng
Liu of Austin, Texas.
Other Rams who placed
in the top four of their
respective classes were jun-
ior Sabrina Worrell (Class
B), freshman Sadiq Khan
(Class C) and sophomore
