Hutoric Boat Seems
to Be Pet of Ocean
From the bottom of the 8#M
where it has rested for 81 years with
the storms of the mighty Pacific
I washing over it, has come the skele-
ton of the once good ship Natalia.
| Three times in the last 25 years
has this romantic old Spanish b-ig
stuck its nose out of the enveloping
sands and waves. And each time it
has been greeted with thousands of
viiitora on shore, folks who came
from miles around to see the boat
that carried Napoleon from the
ialand of Elba when he skipped
therefrom 'way back in 1815.
Now it has come up for tlie third
time down at Monterey, the sea hav-
ing washed the sands from it. Just
the jagged remnants of its ribs sre
in riew this time, sticking out of
the water about three feet at a point
near Fishermen's wharf, where it
lanlf in 1843.
A famed old boat has the Natalia
been throughout a romantic career.
It was built in the early Nineteenth
oentury, constructed entirely of
teakwood.
After taking Napoleon back to
France it found its way to the Pa-
cific coast and took part in manv a
smuggler's raid organized in Mex-
ico. In 1843 it was blown ashore
and pounded to pieces.—Chicago
Tribune.

• Cabbage in Front Rank
Cabbage, with a market output of
more than 30,000 carloads a year,
ha* become one of the three most
important vegetables in the I'nited
States, ranking next to potatoes and
tomatoes. About two-fifths of the
market crop is early Southern cab-
bage mainly from Florida, Texas,
South Carolina. Virginia and Ala-
bama. Three-fifths is shipped from
the North and West, mainly from
New York, Wisconsin. Michigan,
Colorado and California. Kraut
manufacturers take about one-sev-
enth of the commercial crop, it is
said. Kraut is made from Northern
cabbage of the large domestic type,
and the factories ar* located mainly
iu New York, W isconsin and Michi-

Window and Sunlight
A window on the south side of e
building will get. in the course o.
a vear, 45 times the amount of sun-
light that a window on the north
side will get. according to experi-
ments conducted by William Ku-
nerth, associate professor of pln.-ics
at Iowa State college at Ames. Iowa.
Mr. Kunerth's experiment does not
include daylight, only sunlight.
While the north window is getting
one unit of sunshine to 15 for th'
south window, the east window ge *
27 units and the southeast window
gets 38 units. When the sunshine
strikes a window glass at too sharp
an angle the sunshine is reflected
and hence docs not penetrate into
the room.

elevated appears at least doubtful.
111 if we mean by human nature
personality—the interaction of the
•elf with the civilization in which it
has its being, rtien not only change
but improvement may be fairly
claimed. . . _ Without raising
question of comparative intel-
lectual power as between the ancient
and the modern world, one may
boldly affirm that Darius tx ngi-
manuB could not have handled the
affairs of Henry Ford. A recent
writer has declared that Napoleon
Honaparte could scarcely have per-
formed the work of Marshal Foch—
he was not a big enough man!
In view of the enormous practi-
cal change in civilization—in the ef-
ficiency and in the enlightenment of
the individual—it. seems reasonable
to hazard the opinion that M. Poin-
<are is a happier, because a more
moral, n;an than Julius Caesar

man; that Mary Putnam Jacobi was
a greater power for good than Ma-

It was at the most impressive re-

has ever seen, following the march
of more than 10fi,000 men in the
Holy Name parade. #
President Coolidge, impreM*d, as
were all observers, by the solemn
fervor of these Catholic men in giv-
ing public testimony of their devo
tion to God and country, with bowed
head and very solemn ipein, was
about to snter the speakers' stand on
the Washington monument grounds
for the closing event of the conven-
tion.
i The hierarchy of the Catholio
church had stepped aside to make
way for the dignitaries of state, and
all the air a solemn stillness held.
| A young urchin, imbued with the
principle that all men are created
equal, exercising tlie right guaran-
teed in the Constitution of freedom
of speech, and operating on the un-
derstanding that in this free land
of ouri each man is the peer of any
king, sang out, "Hello, Cal," and
the President was surprised into a
smile. •

Remembered Humble Friends
When Lady Ursula Grosvenor,
daughter of the duke of Westmin-
ster, Britain's richest peer, was
married in London recently special
invitations wefe sent to many hum-
ble friends, who had known the
young bride since her childhood
days. One of the guests was an old
man who for many years had been
employed as a crossing sweeper in
front of Grosvenor house.
Joyous Affair
A man spending his vacation at
home got rather tired. His wife
wouldn't let him go anywhere with-
out her and she was too busy to go
anyw here. At the end of the second
week a neighbor who understood the
situation saw him trotting down the
street alone, wearing a happy smile,
"Well, John, did you manage to
get out by yourself?"
"Yep, got an engagement with
the dentist," was the hilarious re-
sponse. 0
Uae for Bobbed Hair

China with bobbed hair, but she
carried her shorn tresses with her in
the shape of an exquisite picture of
Macao harbor, which she had em-
broidered in silk with her own hair
while crossing the Pacific. The nec-
essary relief in the picture was ob-
tained by the use of white hair, for
which one of the stewards sacrificed
a lock. •
