Shanghai Music Group Performs Oct. 13
For eight young Chinese
musicians, the fall of 1982
•night be remembered as their
first time in America, and
October of 1982 might be re-
membered as the time they
made many friends in Houston,
Texas. These musicians from
the Shanghai Conservatory of
Music have been staying in
our town as part of their
two-month American tour, and
will offer a public perform-
ance Oct. 13 at the Univer-
sity of Houston's Cullen
Auditorium, at 8 PM.
Their performance will of-
fer traditional Chinese clas-
sical works and folk melodies
played, in solo and ensemble,
by a Si Xuan (silkstring)
Quintet. Also featured will
be cello, violin and piano
works by Mendelssohn, Weber
and other Western classical
composers.
The performance marks the
fourth cultural exchange pre-
sented by the China Cultural
Society of Texas and Louisiana
The Society, in cooperation
with the Chinese Consulate
General in Houston and the
Chinese People's Association
for Friendship'with Foreign
Countries, has arranged the
tour of 18 cities in five
states as part of its con-
tinuing aim to enhance mu-
tual understanding and
friendship between the U.S.
and China.
Prospects for. fostering
goodwill in Houston have
proved considerable: by
the time of their Oct. 13
performance, the musicians
will have visited and play-
ed for numerous institu-
tions including Houston's
High School for the Perfor-
ming and Visual Arts, Texas
A&M, Lamar University and
Kingwood High School. A
special performance was to
be held Sept. 29 at Thomas
Center for the mentally re-
tarded .

($3 for students), are

Ticket Center of the Univ-
