Wesleyan introduces
American humanics
certification program
Matthew Smith
News editor
The nonprofit sector is grow-
ing and has more than 50,000 job
opportunities, according to Angie
Foster, student liaison and coordi-
nator lor American Humanics at
Wesleyan. The nonprofit environ-
ment has a high turnover rate
because many people enter without
the proper qualifications.
American Humanics was created
to combat-this by offering quality
training in the nonprofit industry.
American Humanics is an
alliance of nonprofit organizations
of more, than 40 colleges and uni-
versities whose goaj is to
effectively prepare people to work
in the nonprofit industry. Texas
■Wesleyan University is the only
north Texas school participating in
the program.
American Humanics is a certi-
fication program, not a degree.
Poster said that most students
involved are pursuing separate
degrees.
Poster said completion of cer-
tification requires seven to eight
courses, some of which can fit into
students" regular degree. Students
are also required to complete to
complete two internships and
attend' the annual American
Humanics Management Institute.
American Humanics has more
than $1 million in loans and Schol-
arships for qualified students,
according to Foster,
Further, Wesleyan . and
American -Humanics work with
students to find positions within
the nonprofit sector after comple-
tion. Some of these organizations
include: The American Red Cross,
Boy Scouts of America, Catholic
Charities USA, Habitat for
Humanity International and Big
Brothers, Big Sisters of America,
The program, overseen by Dr.
Allen Henderson, dean of the
school of education. There are cur-
rently seven students involved.
' Foster said the students are
excited about the program and she
expects it to grow in the next few
years.
Those interested in more
information on American
Humanics should contact Foster at
531-4945.

Technological Advances Make Applying to Law School Easier
While the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) has
centralized the application process to law schools for some time,
disseminating to the designated law schools copies of the official
transcripts and documents furnished by each applicant, personal
reference letters in the past were still sent individually to each law
school. That will no longer be necessary; all law schools have
officially agreed to include those letters within the service provided
by LSDAS.
Remember, also, that your application to law school can be
completed on your computer either by purchasing the LSACD CD-
ROM or, beginning in September, on the web. Both methods will
cost $4^.95 The web method w ill require a credit card to activate
t.he program
An order form tor the CD and test preparation materials is
contained within the LSA T Registration and Information Book, The
booklets are available in the Pre-Professional Office Stop bv and
pick up your copy before you leave for the summer.
New Technology for I're-Dental Students, Too.
T he American Dental Association has provided a computerized
tutorial for the Dental Admission Test It w ill be available to the
JPR 3101 and 3102 classes. It may also be purchased for a $10
Miry ice fee. 1998 will likely be the final year for the written version
to be administered Research indicates that applicants test equal!)
well on the written test and the computerized test.
