JAMES MICHEL RETIRES
It Is reported in mining circles that James
Michel, who ior three years worked as a com-
mon mucker in a small Gold Mine near Idaho
Springs, Colorado, ha* retired with a huge for-
tune.
Michel came to Colorado ten years ago and
like hundreds of prospectors found his funds
insufficient to purchase a claim, so was finally
forced'to accept a job as a common mucker.
There was a time when the mine did not have
sufficient funds to meet their payroll, and it
was at'this period that Michel used his Ger-
man ingenuity, accepting a small interest for
his labor. However, within a few months all
liabilities were paid from the sale of ore and
claims, and Michel's little old investment of
$163.25 grew and grew and when he retired hi*
income was in excess of $1,000.00 per month.
Write to 410 Railroad Building, Denver, Desk
12, and they will send you information of op-
portunities and experiences that have eclipstd
that of Michel's. (No obligation.)

PICTURES IN THE HOME

DO YOU think of the picture frame
as something In and of itself
—like a piece of bric-a-brac?
It shouldn't lie so considered; for
regardless of Its own loveliness, the
frame must be In harmony with the
color and spirit of Its plctnre, or It hi
as disappointing as the right hat on
the wrong fat*.
My neighbor, for Instance, Is a wom-
an of excellent taste, who would never
he guilty of framing her daughter's
piquant little face In a stern bonnet
of tailored strew, yet when It comes
to pictures, her water-color of trees
and sunset tints she has mounted ou
h dead white mat. bounded b.v a hard
gold frame that Is most unfriendly to
Its hazy atmosphere.
What a different appeal It would
have If the mdf^were' rtifa pastel shade
tures done In strong colors, or show-
ing large single objects or very active
scenes, need frames of greater weight
than do those slighter In six*. color or

sonality as truly us human beings do;

found In the picture, or n creamy buff,
with hand-tinted bands-of deeper tone
ilone close to the scene, and a poly-
chrome frame of antiqued gold with
lints of green or mauve!
For oil paintings, gMt frames of dig-
nified, simple design are oped; for In-
teriors. landscapes, portraits of Wom-
en, a decorative ship motif In high
colors, and for the man's portrait, or
the calm, severe nu-rine, restrained
hand-oarved frames of antiqued gold
are now used.
Prints of Old Master subjects are
framed without mats for two reasons:
First, to better retain the Impression
of the originals, which are always so
framed, and second, because large, or
heavy subjects, particularly over man-
telpieces, are more pleasing when the
frame -Is close.
With mezzotints, color etchings and
engruvlngs. cream mats are used, In-
variably showing line bands In a soft
tan ar gray, and a polychrome frame
tacked themselves to calendars, and
so slipped in as a dally need Instead
of a decoration.
i Like ships that pass In the night
those chromes have come and gone
from our walls. We've cheerfully put
them up as they came along—Indian
maids with perky feathers In their
hair — rollicking kittens — barnyard
scenes—what not. And all the while
the chance for real and permanent
beauty has been quite overlooked.
Why not a picture of true artistic
worth, a good print of such a master-
piece as Inness' "After a Summer
Shower." whose magic freshness and
rainbow promise can whisk us out of
the .kitchen into the coolest of gre®n
meadows—while biscuits are baking
meantime? Why not a framed picture)
Without trespassing on the field of
calendar art, which Is In many In-
stances very highly developed, this sug-
gestion Is made. There Is n deep sat-
isfaction hi the handiwork-af-the
Picture* In the Kitchen.
In stfft blending shades. Etchings and
engravings In black and white have
plain cream mats, bound by narrow
dark wood frames. This group Is ex-
tremely proud of Its dates and artists'
signatures, so In no case should such
markings he hidden by mat of frame.
For sport prints—gay, bold things
that court contrast to set them off—
the black glass, muts with narrow gold
lines are smart today, especially In a
man's room such as the sketch Illus-
trates. With this exception, however,
(which Is stretched to Include Godey
prints and sometimes Colonial tlg-
ures), it seems best for frames to har-
monize tn color rather than to con-
trast with the pictures, for the frame
should be part of the plctnre, not a
thing In Itself.
If you are ever In doubt about the
width of frame to use, whether or riU
a mat would belp, Just remember pic-
tors that none will gainsay—sn educa-
tion, a solace, a lifting power no lesser
art cap bestow. There Is need of this

How to Keep
DR. W. ■. CALDWELL
AT THK A<M OP •
To Dr. W. B. Caldwell, of Montl-
rello. III., a practicing physician for 47
years. It seemed cmel that so many
constipated men, women, children, and
particularly old folks, hud to be kept
constantly "stirred up" and half sick
by taking cathartic pills, tablets, salts,
calomel and nasty oils.
While he knew that constipation
was the cause of nearly all headaches,
biliousness, indigestion and stomach
misery, he did not believe that a
sickening "purge" or "physic" was
necessary.
In Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin he
discovered a laxative which helps to
establish natural bowel "regularity"
even for those chronically constipated.
Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin not only
