THE INVENTOR'S POWER
Kuropetn royalty nccmn to American automo-
biles. Prince Charles of Belgium, vwitin# America, plans
to make the Ford plant on<; of the major it*rn in his
list of things to be examined- Kx-Kinj? Alfonso of Spain
is supposed to have in the back of his head a plan for
coming to America and studinj? automobile-manufacturing
intensively. Prince Nichfflaii of Rumania found Detroit
the most interesting place in America on hi* la*t visit
here.
All of this is only natural, perhaps, nince American
automobiles are very good earn, and American automo-
bile factories are extremely interesting place*. Besides,
mi interest in things mecnancal is one of the pre pro-
gatives of royalty, Lou in XVI of France, who lost his
head in the revolution, wa* an expert clock maker.
(Small Michael of Rumania has a machine shop in hi*
palace. Complicated gadgetn seem to have ome especial
affinity for kings.
More interesting, however, is the way in which the
monarchial-automotive tieup represents a mingling of
new and old. The automobile is the very symbol of the
modern era; the king is an anachronism, as Alfonso can
testify. By their interest in motor cars, the kin^n are
recognizing the mechanical force* which are sweeping
them out of existence.
The part that has been played by mechanical device*
in the development of modern civilization is generally
overlooked.
It was gunpowder and the musket that ended the
axe of chivalry, l>y giving the man on foot a weapon
that made him the peer of the man on horseback.
It was the compfts# thPt enabled the old mariru-rx
of Npain, Portugal, England and Holland to explore the
world and open up new trade routes and new area* for
colonization.
It was the steam engine that made it possible for
the nations to exploit these trade routes and settle these
colonial areas; the steamship that brought distant, lands
close to the exporting centers, the steamdriven factory
that gave the steamship its cargoes.
Another mechanical device, the printing press, made
democracy possible.
Now, today, it is the automobile that has flavored
the civilization of the United State* and has thrown a
new factor into all of the current* of the old world.
After all, our fates lie pretty largely in the hands of
our mechanics and in\entors. If Gutenberg, Watts and
the rest had not lived, the divine right of kin^.s would
Htand today about as -it stood 600 years a(?o. The kin#*
of Europe, coming to America to laak at automobiles,
might salute the newest member of that /roup of me-
chanical devices that ha« dethroned them
