Intramural Athletics
Intramural athletics, which provide npfiortunities for
ail students to participate in sports, have been increasingly
favored in our high school* and collages. There has been
a trend in most educational institutions away from over
emphasis on varsity sports, and a trend toward a urogram
of athletics for all, as w embodied in the intramural pro
gram. j i
The varsity team is highly important because of its
motivating Msflu«*ec and because of the lessons In sports

My philosophy is a social
philosophy. Not one that
leaves the individual out of
account but one that recog-
nises both the law of self
preservation and also preser-
vation of the race The in-
dividual develops through the
Kroup. Both the individual
and the group are real and
effective in our behavior.
Therefore, human life must
be a social life.
The question of the meaning of human social lift
belongs to philosophy, which can not be interpreted either
in the terms of the popular conception of momentary
happiness of the individual or the self-realisation or self
development of the individual's personality On the con
trary, it must lie interpreted i terms of a progressive
realisation of humanity. Hence the way of self-realisa
lion is through social service In trying to build the highest
life for humanity.
The best social service comes through social improve
mrnt in the organization of society. This must come, if
it cornes at all, through scientific knowledge, And by
"scientific" 1 mean leafed, eSri/fed knowledge Man is
not only a bearer, but a creator of culture. Intelligent
is the ability to create new ways of doing things. The
science that deals with the lif<^nd behavior Of man re
veals that all civilisation or culture is the product of
the human intelligence; that culture controls his be
havior ami makes his character. Thus intelligence in
remaking the world modifies man. Man is a product of
the social organi«ation And man's Intelligence in turn
creates the social organisation.
This makes progress possible. Life it progressive
and truth is relative. Truth can he known when tested
and verified, Then authority and conventionality must
give way to new troths. Scientific knowledge applied to
our social organisation of society ia the best and most
effective way of social service in the elevation of humanty
up,,n a higher and more harmonious plane of living.
