SKIPPER CR.YBTREE
Skipper Crabtree
Is Mentor of State
Home Football Team
(Editor's Note: Thi* ia the..,
first of a aeries of article* deal-
ing with former student* of the
colleKe who are now eoaching in
the high schools of the state.
They will appear weekly in the
Chat.
One of the most colorful and dy-
namic figures in the field of athletics
in the Teachers College returned to
the campus recently in a new role.
As coach of the Corsicana State Home
football team, Leroy "Skipper" Crab-
tree, former star Eagle quarter-back,
returned to the scene of his early
training.
Sitting on the coaches bench Crab-
tree looked as cool and tactful as a
:oach, as he ever did in the days of
us triumphs on the local grid-iron
while he served as captain of the
powerful 1 !>2'J Eagle eleven. Crab-
trce's charges were defeated by the
Denton eleven, but even in losing, his
ca.ti gained the admiration and re-
spect of the crowd because of its de-
termination to battle the more power-
ful Broncos until the very end.
Crabtree undertook the guidance of
the State Home eleven in the fall of
9<1o, and with very ordinary material
that year produced one of the most
lowerful teams in the hi*tory of
Class B football in Texas. That year
"rabtree's eleven defeated a number
f powerful Class A team*, and he
nought his team to Denton and
oundly 'munched the highly touted
Denton Bronco* in an exhibition that
'howed his team to be one of the most
•owerful high school teams seen on
he local Held that year. This year,
the Broncos got revenge by heating
the Home KM), but not until the State
Home lads were worn down in the
last period could the powerful Bron-
cos make any headway against Coach
Crabtree's light, inexperienced eleven.
While in the collcge Crabtree es-
ablisfeed for himself an enviable rec-;
>rd. starring in football as captain'
and quarterback of the strong 1929- j
'30 eleven, and al*o taking a very
active- part in college affairs and in
several major organisation* on the
campus. He secured and maintained
the respect of hi* fellow students and
players while he waa in thir insti-
tution, and now, as a coach, he is
making a highly commendable rec-
ord and doing credit to hiniaelf, his
team, and this college.
S. M. U, Bous Before
Steady Running of
Sportsman's Squad
Malcolm Stone, flashy Teachers
College distance man, led hi« team-
mates to a Sit U 3S victory over the
S. M U. Mustangs Saturday after-
noon on the Methodists home course
at Dallaa. Taking the lead at the
start, the Eagle stayed in front over
the entire distance, mgottattag the
route ia 14 minutes and 4# seconds.
Kelly of S. M. U. placed second fol-
lowed by Walter De.vis, one of the
steadiest t tinners on the local team.
Sturdevant of the Mustang* came in
ahead of Captain Ben Wilson of the
locals. Lilian! Wilmeth. showing a
great improvement over last week,
nosed out Harrell, but effects of the
flu were still apparent. Charles Eates
who also showed much improvement
wa* far ahead of Haskin* of the
Dallas team who barely nosed out
Bill Chamber* on the final aprint.
Mitchell of the Mustangs came in
last, far in the rear.
While it is uncertain whether the
local harriers will run against Texas
Christian University or A. O. C. this
week-end, it is certain that they will
put up a real tussle as they are imp-
roving rapidly. They will be further
strengthened by the return to work-
out of Riley IIou*dwright, veteran
distance runner, Coach Sportsman
said.
