Rules Negroes Must Bow to
Public Opinion
For the first time that branch of
tho Jim Crow law which prohibits ne-
groes from traveling In tho imtm. eom-
partments with whites has directly af-
fected the west end of the Texas &
Pacific passenger.
Passenger No. 4 westbound train
duo in Abilene at 10:25 in tho morn- '
Ing told of a slight incident which
curred some time lost night to disturb
tho monotony of travel. It seems that
a negro bought a throgh ticket from
San Francisco to Richmond Vn. and
a Pullman ticket combined. All went .
well until tho Texas border was past.
But last night the negro satnuTe -to
tho smoking room of the Protases
in which wore a number of whites.
One man sprang up and in no mincing
terms ordered the colored passenger
out of the compartment. A slight ar-
gument ensued which resulted In tho
colpred passenger being relegated to
n' dead-head tourist car back of the
Pullman. . He will continue his Juor-
noy over tho Texas & Pacifio In that
car.
Tho question has been fought out on
NEGRO
various occasions. Negroes who per- tho selection of a Jury to try tho Ray yards or tho Fore Ship Building Com-
slst In attempting to travel In tho same ('Lamphero murder cnBo Lamphoro Is pany today to witness tho launching of
sleeping car with wfiltes will soon chnrged with the murder of Mrs. Qun- tho Amercln. Tills is tho strongest nnd
como to understand that there Is such
a thing ns prejudice and public opin-

caso aro stronger than tho technical
law on tho question.
