In historical Interest.. It was fifteen

General Robert E "Leo under the' di-
rection of the United States govern-

of the fort by Capt. T. B. Maltby a no!
ted Indian fighter and scout who did
valiant service of-ridding this part of
the state of hostile bands of Coman-
ches and other tribes of Indians In" the
early days. Fort Phantom belonged
lo' a chain of defenses and garrisons
blch were established by the Feder-
al government all about the same time.

diers and were oo 'piel a garrisons
until about 1875 when the cattlemen
mado their advent Into this territory
and Had succeeded in quieting the In-
dians. The only remnant of Fort
Phantom still standing are. chimneys
of tho .buildings the walls of which
have crumbled into-dust and the old
.magazines which aro-built of brick.
The venturesome cattlemen who es-
tablished their herds upon the prai-
ries whore' buffaloes and Indians for-
merly had undisputed reign made
short shifts of tho wily coppor-color-ed
oppressors of the more Btaid white
settlors farther to.. tho cast. The sol-
diers wero not greatly feared by the
Indians. The latter could make the
forays and get away before tho troops
could intercept them. But they found
It different whon they came tpdoaling
with the cattlemen. The cowboy ele-
ment were always armed and wore
ready for a fight at any time. In ad-
dition to this the cowboys were good
riders and the Indian band had little
chance of making their escape when
they once ran counter to a ranch out
fit It was not long after the advent
of the cattlemen into this section that
the Indians began confining .their
stealing and killing incursions to the
more remote parts of the West where
they ran little chance of running up
against the cowboys.
Col. John M. Simpson candidate for
governor on tho republican ticket was
the pionoor ranchman of the Abilene'
territory. Ho established a large
ranch within a mlje of tho present
site of Abilene thirty-three years ago.
At that time liis nearest neighbor liv-
ed thirty-five miles away. He and
the men in his outfit had many exci-
ting fights with tho wily Indians nnd
It was largely due to their efforts
that the depredating bands were driv-
en out of this section.
Wnnt Bnilrond to Snn Antonio.
Tho people of Abilene nnd tribu-
tary territory are anxious .to secure a
direct railroad connection with San
Antonio. A study of tho situation will
show It Is. claimed that the most mag-
nlflcont undeveloped Teglon of Texas
lies between hero and San Antonio
and that by building a railroad thru
it would bring untold benefits to tho
two terminal towns and tho interme-
diate Bectlon. The fact has been aver-
looked by tho business men nnd citi-
zens generally of San Antonio it is
claimed hero that Abilenels only nbout
175 miles fro mthat city In n direct
lino While Fort Worth Is distant 1C0
with a direct lino of railroad connect-
ing Abilene with San Antonio a hlg
part of tho-trndo which now goes to
Fort Worth would bo diverted to San
Antonio Aside from this there Is an
enormous nroa of country south of.
ereh which would naturnlly give all
of Us trade to San Antonio by reason
of tho proximity and other advan-
tages possessed by that city. Now
settlers are pouring into the territory
which such a railroad would traverse
and a paying tafllc would ho nssured
from the vory start It Is claimed. It
Is pointed out that tho Abilene and
Northern . Railroad from Stamford
passeB through a territory very similar
to that which lies between hero nnd
San Antonio and that tho latter road
Is already doing a heavy business. So
well satisfied are tho owners of the
Abilene nnd Northern that they have
Just taken definite steps to extend the
line from Abilene to Balllnger whore
connection will be made with tho San
Angelo branch of tho Santa Fo.
It has beon suggested by business
men of Abilene who have looked Into
the feasibility and practicability of
building a railroad betwen this place
and San Antonio that the people of
tho latter city bIiouUI take hold of tho
project. It is assured that full co
rip6ratl6n will bo given tho movement
by Abileno cltlzcina. nnd the land own-
ers and tho settlers of tho Interme-
diate territory Tho cost of building
tho rond "would be nominal it is claim-
ed. Tiiq topography of tho country to
bo trnvorscd Involves no engineering
problems or heavy construction work.
IJy the most direct oxtstlng railroad
route It Jb more than 400 mile's from
Abllono to San Antonio. So rcmdto
1b tho latter city generally regarded
that it Is seldom visited -by people of
this section. No business whatever
goes from Abilene to San Antonio;
Tho material interests of tho two sec
tions are much tho snmo it Is conced-
ed and it should not bo hard to get
together on tho project
There nro n number of good towns
on thd route of the proposed road and
It Is thought that they would all glvo
their Bupport to tho enterprise. Not
only would it from a direct route from
Abileno to San Antonio but It would
bo a completing link between a now
north nnd south lino through tho west
em part of tho state In connection
with tho Abileno & Northern and
Wichita Valley roads. Theso arc some
of tho arguments that arc being made
on behalf of tho project by men who
nro interested In seeing It placed on
foot and carried to. completion.
