Indignation in Maine.
Augusta, Maine, Dec. tS.—A
laigily attended indignation meeting
was held here to-night to protest
against the recent action of the gov-
ernor and council with refence to the
election returns. Senator Blaine
presided and made a long address,
setting forth the giievances ol which
he said the people complained. He
declared that the election of Septem-
ber 8th, was preceded by a thorough
canvass, and was a full, free and fair
election, as the official returns show-
ed, that the republican candidate for
governor had a plurality of 21,000
over the greenback candidate and
46,000 over the democratic candi-
date; that in the senate the lepubli-
cans elected nineteen senators and
the opposition twelve; that in the
house the republicans chose nine
members, the opposition sixty-nine,
and that 011 the legislative tickct the
republicans had an absolute majori-
ty of nearly five thousand on the
popular vote. This being the case
he said Common honesty and com-
mon decency, to say nothing of offi-
cial integrity, required that the men
chosen by the people should be de-
clared elected ami receive their cer-
tificates. ;
SHOOTING IN SHERMAN.
One Man Fatally Shot aud Anoth-
er Wounded.
From the Courier 20th.
J Last night about, ten o'clock, two men,
one by the name of Mitchell Ann one by
the name of Elliott, one from Montague
countv and one from Cooke, (Illinois
Bend.)were shot, so our reporter learned,
by polic man Georye Bond. Elliott was
shot in the hip nnd Mitchell, in the back
near the spine. Mitchell is believed to
be mortally wounded, but Eliioit's wound
is thought lobe slight Our reporter did
not get the particulars, further than that
policeman Bond and deputy sheriff Tar-
jott were attempting to arrett them for
disturbing the peace- We learn from
other parties though, that the men who
were shot were not the men who were
disturbing the peace, and that their rep-
uation is that of peaceable men. As the
matter will undergo investigation, we do
not wish to express an opinion now, it
we had any, though we have none.
The\ were brought to the mayor's of-
fice, at the courthouse, and Dr. Steyer
and other physicians were dressing their
wounds at midnight, the last account we
had of them.
Liverpool Cotton Market.
Liverpool, December 19.—This
week's circular of the Liverpool cot-
ton broker's association says cotton
was in moderate demand in the ear-
ly part of the week, and with a pres-
sure to sell a decline was submitted
to. On Wednesday the market be-
came strong and prices partially re-
covered. O.i Thursday the market
was quieter and quotations were
genera'ly lower, for the American
market was dull and declining eailv
in the week with considerable pies-
sure to sell, but on Wednesday there
was a material recovtry. There-
was a quiet feelii g Thuisday, and
quotations were 3-16 of a penny be-
low those ol last Tlurrsd iy. Sea Is-
land was in very moderate demand,
but prices were firm. Futures fluc-
tuated severely, and were weak until
Tuesday evening, when prices de-
clined a farthing. O.i Wednesday
there was some excitement, with
considerable business, and | rices r e-
covered 3-16 of a penny. Oil Thurs-
day the maiket was flat, prices de-
clining 3-33 to one-eight ot a penny,
closing, however, firmer. Final
rates show a decline of 5-32 of a
penny.

Cincinnati, Dec. 19—A. large
meeting of citizens was held this
afternoon to make arrangements for
the entertainment of Southern busi-
ness men who will be invited here-
to the opening of the Southern rail-
road sometime in January. It is
proposed to have from fiftei 11 hun-
dred to two thousand guests, and
among the suggestions lor their en-
tertainment are a monster conceit at
the Music Hall and a banquet at
the same place 011 another evening,
which shall eclipse anything of the
kind ever given in this country.
Energetic measures are being taken
to insure large contributions to can}
out the proposed programme on a
liberal scale.

j. d. woodyard,
Chicago, Dec. 19.—The demo-
cratic state central committee met
to-day, fifty prominent democrats
from various parts of the state being
present, to decide 011 a plan for ar-
ranging the state campaign. John
II. Oberly, of Springfield, intro-
duced a resolution, which caused an
aCiimoniotis debate of four hours,
cot d< inning unqualifiedly any 1'raiM
whereby the will ot the people is
subverted by national or state au-
thorities or individuals. The 1110^1-
ii g voted tlown an amendment ex-
empting the Maine case f>om lie
provisions of the lesolutioi,
then defeated t'ie U-sotution.
From the Sherman Courier.
The county commissioners court ad-
journed yesterday . arteriloon. Besides
routine work, they re-appointed Dr.
Jacklison physician to the poor farm, and
Or Winn "to the. county jail. II. II.
Ilayes was appointed justice of the peace
for precinct ISo. 7, Gordonville. An or-
der was passed directing the county con
victs to be worked in accordance with the
provisions ol the law. And last, but not
least, the commissioners appropriated
$1000 for the purpose of sinking an ar-
tesian well on the public square ot the
city of Shnnan. Jud^e Steedman was in-
structecl to negotiate with responsible
persons tor the immediate commence-
ment of the work.
While we think the court might have
show n a littl more liberality in this mat-
ter, we are very thankful that at last we
have the question assuming a defi-
nate shape. We are confident now that
our public squire will soon be supplied
with an abundance of flowing water.
It is not presumable that $1000 will ac-
complish the work, but after that sum
I h:is been judiciously expended, our good
citizens will not see the work stop for
want of funds. Hip!—Hip! hurrah!
Three rousing cheers and a tiger for the
county commissioners, and especially
Uncle Billy Wheat, who has been the
wheel horse in this artesian well busi-
ness.
Highway Robbery.
Dominic Palattzo. an Italian, wa<
knocked on the head and robbed of his
money Thursday night, on the railroad
one mile soutli of the city. Palattzo was
ubh to walk back to the city during the
night, arid seek shelter, lie was badly
bruised about the head, and yesterday
was unable to walk, becoming dizzy as
soon as begot upon his feet, his story
is rather difficult to understand, as his
brain seems to be affected. But as near
as we can get rtt the facts, he had gone
from Waco to Kansas, and was on his
way back from there, en route for Hearne,
where he h.id work engaged. Two men
I fell in with him somewhere on tiie road,
j and wanted to go with him it he could
get work for them. To this he consented,
j and for seme reason they were walking
on the railroad last night. The two men
knockeu him down and robbed him ot all
his money, some $45, !eaving him on the
mad in tin almost helpless condition.
The presumption ts that they were regu
lar tramps, though Palattzo say* they had
been traveling with nim.— Courier,
Fearful Fate of a Lunatic.
Boston, Dec. 19.—Last night an
unknown man, supposed to have
been insane, entcied the Eistern
railroad at Saco, Maine, an I al-
though he was shot and wounded by
the watchman, kicked over the stove
and demolished the lamps, setting
fire to the buil ling, which with the
fr. ight house and shed attached,
bur ned. The remains of the lunatic
weie found in the ruins.
