Mayor's Court.
Only one name appealed 011 the
mayor's docket Thursday morning.
Vagrancy was the charge. It ap-
pears that the party arrived in this j
city from the Territory Wednesday j
night nnd made the waiting room at
the depot his headquarters. On his
promise to leave town, unless able
to procure employment, the mayor
released him. '
V By authorizing the mayor to re-
lease prisoners convicted of ,a mis-
demeanor 011 promise to leave town,
the council has saved the city manv
a dollar. Formerly the bills for
feeding prisoners amounted some-
times from $80 to$ioo and more per
month. It is true the prisoners were
worked, but what did their work
amount to? Their work simply
amounted to nothing and did not half
pay for the grub charged.# Now, if
an unfortunate stranger gets himself
into trouble by imbibing too freely
or otherwise, he, if unable to pay,
is given the privilege to vamos the
ranch, and as a matter of course he
generally vamoses.

v Crazy Nick loomed up again on
our streets yesterday morning, and
was coolered by the Marshal, which
was as it should be. It is said that
he got away from the authorities at
the court house, but it looks slightly
as though he had been turned loose
by them. However that may ^be,
he will be sent back to them again
and we trust he will be forwarded
frnm there to his proper destination.
He is not only a nuisance but danger-
ous as well and we notify all parties
concerned that he will not be allow-
ed to hang around this city, scaring
men, women and children and en-
dangering the lives of both them
and himself by his crazy freaks.

Col. Parker's Lecture.
Col. Parker's lecture last night
was amusing and entertaining. As
a humorist the Colonel has no equal
in the south, and we are sorry so few
of our citizens were out to hear the
lecture. His powers of imper-
sonation are simply wonderful,
and the parson at the altar
and the judges on the bench came
in for their share with the balance.
We trust the Colonel will lecture for
us again and that our people will
turn out in greater numbers, for he
certainly deserves crowded houses
wherever he goes.

The Church and Wie
Editor Deni&onNcv/i;
The remarks of Dr. Crosby, of
the Wizard Oil troup on Wednesday
evening, in regard to their singing in
the Presbyterian church, I think
were calculated to mislead the pub-
lic because the doctor did not kijow
all the fact, and as I attempted to
procure the invitation for them to
sing, I desire to state some facts in
regard to the matter, in justice to
myself and especially in defence of
the church to which I belong and
which I love. Betorr the company
appeared in public a friend called on
me and stated that the Wizards had
a fine quartette, and were usually in-
vited to sing in church choirs in
towns where they visited, and
thought the congregation of the
Presbyterian church would like to
have them sing. I thought so too,
and immediately statted out to pro-
cure an invitation from the Elders
and pastor who had control of the
matter. I first called on Mr. Hanna,
and he consented, provided the
pastor, Dr. Matthews, approved
of it; I called on the doc-
tor and he consented, but
said I must get the consent of the
elders as he was onlv moderator of
the session. I then called on Dr.
Acheson the only other active elder
in town ; on asking him, he replied
that he wanted all the good music in
church that we could get. I said
{ou express my sentiments exactly,
knew you would not object, and of
course thought he was not only will-
ing but really desired that they
should sing. I then called to see
Mr. Waddill, at the Alamo hotel,
and not finding him, left a note, ask-
ing him to inform the company that
I had seen the pastor and elders and
that a cordial invitation would be
given.
When the company made their
first public appearance, there w^re a
number of members of the Presby-
terian church present, at least one if
not more, thought the songs irrevent
and even blasphemous. I then knew
and said, that the invitation would
be withheld, because the session
would not and could not give it in
the face of such opinion on the part
ot members of the church, whether
such opinions were well grounded or
not. It was not a very important
matter to have them sing in church,
but to disregard the conscientious
Scruples of members of the church
would have been a wrong and an
important matter, though it is mere-
ly a matter of opinion.
I of course thought I was put in a
false position by the failure of the
session to notify me of the action
they intended to take in the matter,
but I am willing; to believe that there
was no intention on their part to ad-
minister to me a rebuke for what I
had done, as it might seem to oth-
ers.
I trust that nothing has occurred
to influence the public unfavorably
in regard to the concert for the ben-
efit ot fhe young ladies' society. I
assisted them in procuring the use
of the Methodist church. They
sought it solely because it was the
largest hall in town, and they hope
to fill it. Their object is one that
doubtless meets the hearty, approba-
tion of every good citizen in or out
ot the church. I would here remark
that the use of the church through
my friend Mr. Clifford, was very
eenerously given, free of any charge
whatever. Such generosity on the
part of our Methodist brethren goes
straight home to the heart of all
tight thinking Christian people.
