If There Be Any Truth Here
Then We Should Act
ing for another election to place another In
the office.
This is not the first time matters of
t^iis kind have been brought to the atten-
tion of the Press, there being numerous
such statement made and a variety of
iharges of fraud and maladministration of
matters in other capacites being outlined.
It would seem that if there is any
truth in the matter, tjhen those citizens who
claim to know such to be tyie case, and who
would stand for what they call "bettei
public officials" would get busy at once
and stop the whole thing before we have in
Wiis county another case of malfeasance or
maladministration in office.
The Press stands for clean men in
public office and wants to see elected only
those who are able to keep the matters of
ihe people free from graft, rake-off, com-
binations of big business, and special
privilege.
If there is such a condition facing us
pis is indicated by the letter from Sherman,
then action at once should be taken.
If tjie party is innocent of any such goings
on, then he should be quickly exhonorated.
Witjh this country facing a situation
Ghe like of which we have never before, it
behooves us to double check our men in of-
fice and see to it that we have not elected
men, or retain men, who may let us down
in any fashion.
00
Not tjiat our church folk may not al-
ready be considering this matter of renew-
ing their pledge to their Lord and under-
taking to carry on a more faithful church
life and a loyalty to the cause of church
but just in case some are not, w^iat will it
take to arouse them? It would seem that
the clear statement of President Roose-
velt in his speech of Dec. 28 would send a
jour winters in one section and our,
summers in another Onu
(thing our grandfathers used to do

A responsible party who signs himself
as being "yours for better public officials"
makes the statement that this county has
elected a man to public office who today
stands charged with a true against him

board that says he is liable is'
right, according to the laW. Oh-|
viously somebody or many some-!
bodies in Congress blundered in
drafting the law. But there it is. |
Under the draft law as itj
stands, among -those not required
excusing from active selective
service, Congress provided ex-

of specified length of service.
Clearly it is an absurdity to say
that a man with three years' ar-
my enlistment needs no further
training and that a man with
similar service in the Navy and
Marine Corps can be called. But
that is What the law says now,
liable for!surely only through error of om-
the lo:'alj mission that should be promptly
corrected.
If Warren Braschwitz, the De-
troit complainant, is a member of
the naval reserve, the draft board
can be held in error because he
is not required to register, he
cannot be called. But if he ob-

Our /Carrier (Boy* |
The Press works diligently to
get the best of boys for its car-
riers and then takes them into the
confidence of the management
and tries to instill into them the
principles of business, gentlenesi,
courtesy, promptness, and above
all to try and awaken in them the
desire to become something more
around the office than a carrier
boy. There are several avenues
open for a live boy in a daily pa-
per and when we find a young
man who promises development,
he is given every encouragement.
We have some of the best toys in
Denison on the job and need two
or three more like them. The ad-

'Not In jPolitici'
To a newspaper man it poems
rather peculiar to find so many
fellows who sny that they are not
'n politics. Still those fel-.
lows, generally, will get the news-
paper to do their politics or indl-
cate in some fashion that a cer-
tain political situation offers such
h pplenoid field for the newspaper
man to show things up and do the
town a lot of good. If the news-
paperman is gullible, and let the
party take him on, it will show
that he is in it plenty, but wants
to keep it under cover, and let the
newspaper take hifi chestnuts out
of the fire. Why, we ask, should
any man be ashamed he is in pol-
itics, defining politics as being
better government, and being
"in" politics as being active in
trying to get the right man in of-
fice? If we did more of that
kind of work, we would do less
of the lamentation act after we
let others elect them.
