During the winter months
hunting rabbits is a popular*
sport and a wild rabbit makes
a very fine food, but according
to the Stilte Health Department,
extreme care should be used in
the handling of wild rabbits to
prevent a possible infection
with tularemia.
"Those little cottontail rab.
bits are not always as harmless
as they| look," states Dr. Geo.
W.. Cox, State Health Officer,
"for some of them aire infelcted
with tularemia. Thi3 serious
disease which is also known as
rabbit feve,r usually is acquired
by human beings through con-
tact with infected rabbits or
through contact with the in-
fected insect that spreads it
from Animal to animal"
Dr. Cox Kjautionad that hunt-
ers should shoot only the fab-
bits that run away at his ap-
proach. A rabbit without the
energy to scamper1 away from
the hunter is likely to (be a sick
one "that c«n transmit tula-
remia.
"It is necessary to handle un-
cooked rabbit meat cautiously."
Dr. Cox said. "The use of rub-
ber gloves will protect your
hands since the germs may en-
tar the body through any cut or
scratch howqver small if an in-
fected rabbit is handled without
gloves."
