"SO YOU DON'T LIKE
TEXAS," by Virginia Spenevr
in "Holland's—a Texas 'iMagu-
zine:"
This is your first trip to
Texas, you have been here a
few weeks und you are • more
than ready to go home. Tex-
ans are all right, but you just
cannot along with them.
Th0 facts are, they got in your
hair, and you are annoyed be-
cause you let them.
You have been taught that if
a thing needs to bo done, then
do it right now. Texan* are a
little different. They reason
that if you wait until tojuorrow
or next year, maybe you will
not have to do it. It usually
works out that way, especially
if there is somebody liko you
aroun^ all fired up to do it
right now. Which is all right
with Texas.
With your drive, your suc-
cess in Texas is assured. At
the height of that success, you
take a trip back home. You
rush out to see an old friend,
to give them the glsui hand.
The Ifirst fellow you meet
seems a J)it cold, not half as
glad 1° see y°u ftS you are to
see htm. It could not be that
he is jealous of your success
No, impossible. He must be j
(willed inljout something. Per-\
haps you were not sufficiently
interested in him and bis busi-
ness. Should you look him up
again, ask some friendly ques-
tions?
A native Texan would rather
sit down and talk it over than
get the job done. He likes to I
talk, and after ho has told yonj
his family history, he sits ba<*k
expectantly, eager to boat you
tell your.'. If you fail to rc-
* ciprocate you are not friendly
and, therefore, queer. After
patient prodding if he still gets
no results, he diagnoses your
case You are just a damnyah-
yankee, which means that, you
hailed from somewhere north
of Red River. Lots of "furri-
new" from up nawth are real
folks once you get to know
them; but they are all a little
"standoffish" at first.

fan ruffle the easy going Tex
an. Ruffle him* You will
make him righting mad if you
persist in it. That one thin--
is to try to change him, to
teaeh him to become like you.
H® does not want to be like

respond, then do your job and
his too. He will smile toler-
antly and think you are a sap.
You meet some other friends,
and they are all alike, lacking
in warmth and friendliness.
None of them have done as
well as you, doubtless due to
the stiff competition in that
country. Buti they should not
resent your success. No, jeal-
ousy was not the answer. But
what?
Disappointed in your vaca-
tion, you return to Texas, and
feel a glow at the prospect of
getting back into the old har-
ness. Your Texas friends and
acquaintances welcome you
hack, give you the glad hand;
they say they missed you, ask
interested questions, hope you
j had a n'ce trip. You aw grate-
ful for their interest, flattered
by their warm welcome.
Alone, yon ponder. What was
the matter with the old friends
back home? Don't yon know?
They are the way you use^ to
ibe. You are a Texan now!

Telephoning is easy. But more depends on the user than you perhaps
realize. What you do when making or receiving a call often has a lot
to do with bow Mtiafactory that call is. Here are ten suggestions:
7. Identify yourself. Not everyone
recognizes you by your voice.
8. Space calls on par-
ty lines. If you have a
series of calls to make,
allow a few minutes be-
tween each one so others can use the
line.
9. Keep calls brief on party lines.
Other folks on the line will appreciate
your thoughtfulness.
Avokf. calling during
busy hours if possible.
Before you call, make
sure of the number, j
2. Give the called party time to
answer.
3. Speak directly into the mouthpiece.
4. Move the switch book slowly up
and down to recall or signal the oper-
ator.
5. Replace the receiver carefully
when you have finished talking.
6. Answer calls promptly. It's cour-
teous to do so.
