EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS ARCHIESVOL. 11 O. SPRING 1987
PRESIDENT'S PAGE . FILE.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ETGS !
We are ten years old this year! Our first president, Janice Cox Brown, provided
the leadership and the other charter members provided the long range
vision for the future. By January 1978, we had purchased an AB Dick 310 Offset,
and we were selling our surname index from our first seminar for 50 cents
plus 25 cents mailing cost. Hughes Ratliff and Mattie Alice Scroggin Baker
were copying Smith County Marriages to 1900, to be published by our society -
ETGS was off and running.
After the charter meeting of ETGS, each of us was given a membership number
alphabetically. Then as new members joined, each was assigned a number in
order as each joined. If one failed to renew one's membership, the number remained
intact. Check your number in the Roster of Members, and you can see
how this corresponds with our growth!
East Texas material is vast and was difficult to obtain before ETGS. If you
were fortunate enough to have some of John Wilkins' EAST TEXAS RECORDS, which
were published earlier, these were some of the few to be found published for
sale. So haven't we grown rich in records? Our County Representatives from
the six counties have contributed actively, and this material has made us
richer, indeed.
Have you marked your calendar for April llth and sent your surname list and
reservation to Frances Brock for the seminar? This seminar should help us with
"How To ... ". One clue could spell the difference for many of us! Charles
Steger's selection of Sandra Hargreaves Luebking for the seminar is outstanding. An organization is strongest when all of us work together. When I was approached
concerning this position, my natural response was NO - but in the background,
I could clearly hear my father, David Waldrop, saying: "Yes, you can --- if you
do the BEST you can". David Waldrop was my teacher, my friend, my earthly protector,
and my genealogical pal. He taught me to love my people - to want to
know who they are, where did they live, what kind of people were they. This
is what genealogy is -- love of our people -- and love for one another.
The past decade has been all we had envisioned and more -- the next decade is
even brighter. I hope that each one of us will work with our talents to make
this year the ETGS year, yet!
