MEMORIAL
On The Death Of
ELDER THOMAS HANKS
This Association being under the painful necessity to
record the death of our much-esteemed Brother, Elder Thomas
Hanks, who departed this life since our last Session, in
the 73rd year of his age: in memory of our Brother, who was
our Moderator for many years, we can only mourn his loss, not
only as our Moderator, but his exemplary life as a Minister
of the Gospel; and from the best information, he was the first
Baptist that ever preached in Texas. From that time till his
death he has met with many trials and conflicts; as a citizen
he was honest and upright, leaving an unblemished character;
as a Minister of the Gospel he was unspotted from the world,
and in the language of Job, "He has come to a full age, like
a shock of corn in his season." We sympathize with our brethren
and his relatives. We can say in truth and much confidence,
that our loss is his gain. We will conclude our memorial
remarks, by appreciating his exemplary life, in honor to the
same good cause of our blessed Redeemer, who was delivered
for our offences and rose again for our justification. Though
dead, may he ever live in the minds of his brethern as a pattern
of a Gospel Minister in truth and verity.
