Approximately 287 1 lardin-Siimmons University students were candidates for degrees
on Saturday, May 8'' in two ceremonies, 1():00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., in Behrens (Chapel.
Retiring Ahilene mayor (rady Barr and I)r. Michael (C. (Mike) Waters, president and
chief executive officer for Hendrick Health System, spoke at commencement exercises.
Dr. Jesse (C. Fletcher, president emeritus of HSU who served as president from 1977
to 1991, received an honorary doctorate at the 1 0:00 a.m. commencement exercises.
Waters, the president of Hlendrick Medical (:enter since 1980 and a state and
national hospital leader, addressed the candidates for degrees during the morning
commencement ceremony. Waters received an honorary doctor of laws degree front S U
in 1991.
Grady Barr delivered the charge at the afternoon commencement ceremony. Barr,
who has owned and operated Barr Roofing (Company for almost 40 years, was elected in
1 999 as the 34'1 mayor of the (ity of Abilene.
Dr. turnerr presided at both services, assisted by D)r. I)on Williford, associate vice
