Johnson
Curt Douglas
Johnson, a part-
time resident of
Port Aransas and
owner of the Get
Reel, a sports-
fishing boat that
homeports in Port
Aransas, died
Sunday, July 9,
2006 in Marigot, St. Martin of a heart
attack after a deep sea fishing excur-
sion in the ESPN Xtreme Release
Billfishing Tournament. He was 50.
An Austin automobile dealer, he
was born in Dallas on Oct. 12,1955,
to Dolores and Leif Johnson. His
family moved to Austin two years
later, where he lived the remainder
of his life.
Johnson graduated from Westlake
High School in Austin, attended The
University of Texas where he was
a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
After college, he joined his brother
Robert at Leif Johnson Ford and ran
five Central Texas dealerships which
remain family-owned.
He was chairman of the Austin
Curt Johnson
Automobile Dealers Association, the
South Texas Ford Dealers Advertis-
ing Fund, and was national chairman
of the Ford National Dealer Council.
He and his father were the first father
and son to both hold this position. He
was named a Time Magazine Quality
Dealer in 2006.
In 1996, Johnson formed Shar-
ing God's Love, a non-profit prison
ministry. After building the Chapel
of Hope inside the John B. Connally
Prison in Kenedy, and a Family Re-
source Center for families visiting
loved ones incarcerated at the Con-
nally Unit, Johnson began raising
money for full-ride college scholar-
ships for children whose fathers were
in prison. He was in. the process
of establishing scholarships at The
University of Texas in Austin and
Texas A&M Kingsville at the time of
his death. The Bill Hart Grand Slam
honoring Port Aransas angler Bill
Hart is a fundraiser for the TAMUK
scholarship.
Johnson was awarded the Gov-
ernor's Criminal Justice Volunteer
Award in 2004.
He was an active member of St.
Martin's Lutheran Church, and
helped develop the AISD Partners
in Education Earning by Learning
Program. He held leadership roles as
a member of the Bachelors of Austin,
the Admirals Club, and the Austin
Golf Club.
An avid hunter and golfer, he began
billfishing in the 1990's, and won
trophies in tournaments from the Gulf
of Texas to international waters. The
600 pound blue marlin he caught the
day before he died was the biggest
fish he had ever caught. Captain of
the Get Reel is Brian Phillips of Port
Aransas.
Johnson is survived by his wife of
26 years, Cathy Matthews Johnson;
his son Leif Matthew Johnson; his
brother Robert (Sheila) Johnson; his
sister Brook Anne Johnson Broesche
(Jerry); two nieces, four nephews,
great-nieces and mother-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his
infant brother and his parents.
A service will be held at 2 p.m.
tomorrow, Friday, July 14, at St.
Martin's Lutheran Church, 606 W.
15th St. in Austin. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be made to Sharing
God's Love, P.O. Box 4648, Austin,
TX 78765, or the charity of choice.

God-given relationships
Leveridge
On Monday
evening, July
3, my daughter
Cindy, son-in-
law Russ, Judy
and I climbed
into their SUV
and went to
Ingleside to
take care of a
business mat-
ter. While we
were waiting
outside in the
SUV for Russ to sign some papers, a
strange thing must have taken place,
for this was the only place we stopped
while we were on this trip.
None of us realized anything dif-
ferent at first, but after we stopped
on the ferry on our return trip we
began to hear the muffled meows of
a cat. The sounds persisted as we left
the ferry, so we stopped at the first
opportunity and got out to see if we
could find anything, and we did not.
Shortly after arriving home, Cindy
went back to the SUV and discovered
a small kitten. The kitten was rather
dusty and dirty from riding on the un-
dercarriage of the SUV. She cleaned
it up and brought it into the house.
It was so very small and frightened,
and we were amazed that it managed
to stay with us all that way. Judy and
I had previously decided to remain
pet-free, but after this experience, we
all agreed that this little kitten was
pre-ordained to be with us. So we
are no longer pet-free and now are
considering the names of "Fearless",
"Frisky" and "AG" (Amazing Grace),
but haven't yet made a final decision.
It is Thursday afternoon, and Judy
just returned from a $100 visit to the
vet with a little kitten that weighs only
1 pound. You don't have to be great
at math to figure how much our new

nobody to talk to.
In closing their meeting, they sug-
gested that the city council extend the
committee's term of service until they
can hear what McKenna suggests.
At that point, they said, they should
have enough information to make
their own recommendations.

Father Al Leveridge and his wife, Judy, hold a kitten that stowed
away in their daughter's SUV and rode from Ingleside to what is
now her new home in Port Aransas. Relationships, Father Al said,
are God-given. The unnamed kitten is a case in point.

their 50 years
Joanne and Lee Roy Blair Jr. of Ce-

be extra special. The couple will be
coming to Port Aransas this weekend
to celebrate 50 years of marriage.
The Blairs were married July 15,
1956, in the Hutto Baptist Church and
honeymooned in Port Aransas.

to honor their years together.
The celebration will include a
sunset cruise on the Kohootz.

Beach gulley
Recent rains that caused
gullies down area beaches
didn't deter dedicated
beachgoers like this family
which was enjoying the Gulf
near Avenue G on Friday, July
7. The family, one member
said, is from "everywhere
in Texas, including Alpine,"
and has been coming to Port
Aransas for vacations for
generations.
