Secretary/Treasurer of the chap-
ter and a charming lady. There
was a rumpus room with numer-
ous pertinent posters, photos
and newspaper items of the
activities of the associated div-
isions. Entertainment at the
banquet was provided by a
multi-lingual singer, the son of
the Dautartases and a most
interesting young men who is
a professional entertainer and
has traveled extensively includ-
ing a couple of tours of Russia.
I had made a list of the Hell-
cats who attended but, typical-
ly, misplaced it. Perhaps a list
will appear elsewhere. Next
years's reunion will be held in
Montreal and we were assured
that the Armee Francaise will
be well represented. So, practice
up on your "Voulez-vous couch-
er" and join the international
group.
As the years go by our eyes
grow dimmer, our memories dis-
integrate and, in general, our
senses lose their acuity. The
faces we see at the reunions
are familiar but too often we
cannot match a name to the
face. We then slily glance at
this name tag, hoping that he
does not catch us at it. To
avoid this problem and to spare
embarrassment we suggest that
our names be printed on rib-
bons similar to those provided
First-timers or Unit Reps. If the
name is not Schmalfeld or
McWorkman there should be
room on the bottom for the
Hellcat's un.:t.
The Hospitality Room is the
meeting point and center of
activities for the BN and every
effort is made to ensure the
comfort and well-being of our
Hellcats. Our total expenditures
at San Antonio were in excess
of $1200. Of that $678 was for
rent. Until Saturday contribu-
tions were far below that
amount. When some of our men
learned of the deficit they im-
mediately responded with ex-
ceedingly generous contribu-
tions. You know who you are
and we thank you. Many units
solicit contributions prior to the
reunions, a commendable prac-
tice and one that we hope our
members will adopt.
We realize that it sounds like
a broken record, but we again
remind those who have not
done so to pay dues. And we
again urge you to send a bio-
graphy to Ken Bradstreet. He

It is that time of year that we
must get our 1990 dues paid. A
lot of you paid your dues when
you registered for the reunion
in San Antonio, but there are a
great many still unpaid at this
time. This issue of the Hellcat
News contains a dues envelope.
If you have not paid your 1990
dues then be sure and prepare
your check and enclose it in
the envelope, so we do not have
to send out a lot of delinquency
notices, which costs the Associ-
ation a great deal of unneces-
sary expense.
I spent the past week end in
Denver visiting my grandson,
and talked to Tom and Anne
Brassell while there. Anne has
some ailments at this time and
not feeling well. Tom is semi
retired, working about 50 per-
cent of the time, doing a good
bit of traveling for his com-
pany. I was unable to reach
Norman Denny on the tele-
phone so I cannot report on
Norman.
Aaron Tucker, A Btry. Albe-
marle, NC, "My wife and I are
would also appreciate other per-
tinent and interesting items
such as news articles, your own
recollections and experiences
and perhaps some photos.
We just realized that this is
the December issue. We wish
you all a Most Joyous and
Glorious Holiday and a Healthy
and Happy New Year.
doing pretty well after having
recovered from our housefire
when we lost everything and
had to save ourselves by jump-
ing out the upstairs windows a
few years ago. With our age it
took us just a little longer to
overcome. This summer we
went to Germany for a family
reunion. Also my wife and
daughters went to spend the
bicentennial celebration in
Paris. They enjoyed it very
much. I am still active in the
local VFW which keeps me
busy. Hope to make the next
reunion. We survived hurricane
Hugo with lots of wind damage
to our property, no electricity
and no water for a week, but
we did survive it."
Joseph Stankunas, A Btry.,
San Diego, CA "I could not
make the reunion and I feel so
guilty as I had planned months
ahead. In fact Weldon Norman
and I had planned our own get
together and I looked forward
to meeting Sarah, who has so
graciously invited all members
of the 494th to stop by the
house anytime, an open invita-
tion to all. Recently I was
hospitialized with pneumonia
and restricted for travel and
confined to bed rest for two
weeks. Oh, how I missed the
goody guys. Stopped by the
contact officer at the local
veterans administration office
and we had a long chat about
recent changes. First I want to
aquaint the members with the
following abbreviations: NVS -
The National Veterans Service.
BVA - Board of Appeals; COVA
U.S. Court of Appeals. For the
members of the 494th, I say
that you should take advantage
of your right of appeal. When
the claim for benefits is denied
at the local level, the matter is
by no means closed. Those who
have looked over your claim are
not infallible. It was for this
reason the BVA Board of Veter-
ans Appeal was created. When
the appeal arrives in Washing-
ton, D.C., for consideration by
the BVA, the NVS service staff
takes over. Keep on fighting.
In closing I want to reiterate
what T. K. Clement A/494th
told me after the war - we all
had a job to do and we did it -
even in death his words are so
true to life."
Robert Koller, B Btry., Point
Pleasant Beach, NJ, Advises
that he had a heart attack and
was in the hospital for a month.

Marcel Bruton, San Francis-
co, CA B Btry., "I know some
of my old buddies are wonder-
ing how we made out in the
earthquake. It was a pretty
good shake but no real damage
or injury. The Brutons live in
or near San Francisco and we
all came through in good shape.
The news media makes the
overall picture look worse than
it is by showing the same scene
time and again. The Mariana
district where the fire was, is
built on a fill. It is land that
was reclaimed from the Bay
many years ago. We live in the
