Proceeds Will Be Applied Toward Liquidation of the Indebted*

Institutions—Sacrificial Giving Is Sought
Christmas

In probably the largest single ex-
Christinas cash offering that
Ii .s over been sought by any de-
njj.ilnation in America, the South-
'•'•n Baptist Convention is asking
tiie churches affiliated with it to
provide a cash thank offering at
thn approaching Christmas season
of $2,000,000. The proceeds will
be applied toward the retirement
of heavy debts upon the Home and
Foreign Mission Boards and several
other agencies of the Convention.
4'orabined debts of approximately-
$T ,750.000 are now owed by the
virions Southern Baptist Conven-
tion boards and institutions, these
debts having accumulated over a per-
iod of several years because the reg-
ular receipts from the churches have
|lot, been sufficient to maintain the
work of the various institutions as
expanded a few years ago when the
churches /were supporting missions
and bgrfevolences more generously
sy are today. A portion of
I indebtedness is bonded
gift are Dr. George W.
Truett of Dallas, president of the
Southern Baptist Convention, and
members of the large Executive and
Promotion Committees of that body.
Business Men Qlve Liberally
Indicating tho manner' In which
the Baptist business men of the
South are responding to the call
for the Thank Offering, a layman
in one state has agreed to add
$100,000 to tho fund if the Baptists
of the South generally respond to
the effort, while another business
nan in another state has announced
an unconditional gift of $50,000. Un-
dor the leadership of Dr. J. T. Hen-
derson of KnoxvJlle,' secretary of
the Southern Baptist Brotherhood,
an effort is being made to enltst
all the large Baptist business men
of the South in inaldng big gifts
to this effort. Prom this source
several hundred thousand dollars le
expooted.
In its" appeal for the siiccms of
this cash offering, the Executive
Committee of the Southern Conven-
tion is asking individual Baptists
throughout the South lo Join in giv-
ing sacrificially to this purpose
through, the elimination of unneces-
sary giving to one another and mak
! ing their Christmas gifts to Christ
and his causes instead.
The proceeds of tho offering will
be distributed among the several
Convention objects upon the follow
ing basis:
Mr. J. B. Koontz left. Wednesday on

THE HAPPY DAY
The sun that bright December day,
Shone over the hills of frozen gray,
Where the merry children loved to
play >
In the snow and ride their sleigh.
Meanwhile we did our daily chores
We packed in wood from out of doors
And the children swept the floors,
While their mother worked out doors
And the father bright and gay,
Came home to watch the children play,
With their toys;.on Christmas day,
While all was happy, merry and gay,
First « —Blanche Adams.
TWO BOYS
It was Christmafc Day to those boys,
And they werrt very happy,—
When they found,in their stocking lots
of toys,
And everybody was happy.
It was Christmas Eve to those boys,
And they wer« happy still,
When the yfound on the tablethings
for those boys,
And those boys went skating over
the hill .
But Ohl it was a Christmas Day to
their mother,
For down at the beach
It was her brother
Who on Christmas Day made a
speech.

"CHRISTMAS EVE"
By LOUIS KOERBER
Everything was peaceful and still,
Not a person was on the hill,
Every small child was asleep,
The doors were closed so they couldn't
peep.
Santa came in his pretty sled,
To give some toys to children in bed,
He drove over the house tops so peace-
ful and still,
Then he went flying over the hill.
Let us remember long years ago,
In a stable in Bethlehem,
A woman with a holy babe,
'Twas then our Savior was bom.
