6306 Methods and Materials in the Elementary School
A survey and evaluation of methods and curriculum materials in
light of the objectives of the modern elementary school. Special
attention given to individual and group problems.
6307 Development of Reading and Language
Significance of acquisition and development of language experiences,
visual and auditory perception, and cognitive processes and
skills. Implications from related disciplines for techniques and
procedures for development of decoding and comprehensive skills
and for analyzing silent and oral reading achievement. Minimum
of one hour per week of laboratory experiences.
Prerequisite: Ed. 3301, the equivalent, or permission of the instructor.6308 Teaching Reading in the Content Fields
Development of reading skills and abilities viewed as a continuing
process fused with the teaching of content. Emphasis on cognitive
processes, questioning strategies, study skills, and development of
more complex and refined reading skills. Minimum of one hour
per week of laboratory experiences.
Prerequisite: Ed. 6307 or approval of the instructor.
6309 Diagnostics and Prescriptive Reading
Fundamentals in appraisal and diagnosis of disabled readers and
trends in prescriptions for correcting difficulties in reading. Relationships
of instructional, affective, cognitive, language, organic,
and/or sociological factors to reading difficulties and prescriptions.
Minimum of one hour per week of laboratory experiences.
Prerequisites: Ed. 6307 and 6308.
6310 Practicum in Reading
Evaluation, prescription, and remedial teaching techniques to be
demonstrated by students. Each student works with reading disability
cases under staff supervision.
Prerequisite: Ed. 6309 and consent of instructor.
6320 Principles and Practices of Supervision
A study of philosophical foundations, principles, and practices of
effective supervision in public schools. Special attention is given to
the supervisory roles, media, and methods used to improve instruction
at all grade levels.
6321 Supervision of Instruction
The study of the supervisor's role as a decision-maker and changeagent,
human relations as a requisite of leadership, leadership
behavior, demands and dimensions of supervision. Prerequisite:
Ed. 6320.52
