During the year 1013 the Ameriral Bible
Society circulated 5,251,176 volumes, an in-
crease of 1,201,506 volumes over the year
before. This was given out in ft recent
report made to the board of managers of
the society which met in the offices of the
Bible House in New York. The increase
h«s not been confined to any district or
country, but has been general throughout
the entire world. Even in revolution-torn
Mexico during the year Oil towns and vil-
lages were visited by the society col-
porteurs and 23,309 volumes, 5,087 Bibles,
5,198 New Testaments and 13,084 Scripture
portions circulated.
An Increase was shown, throughout the
United States and marked increases in the
number uf volumes circulated in foreign
countries were reported. The La Plata
Agency with headquarters at. Buenas Aires
reported 70,941 volumes were circulated in
that section during the year just passed.
;| This is an increase of 12,242 over the year
before. Material increases are shewn In
Levant, Siam, China, Japan, Korea and
Philippine Islands,
broke all cords.
The whole number of issues is made up
of 412,299 Bibles, 763,158 New Testaments,
and 4,075,789 portions. The principal ad-
vance, of course, is in the latter ltem«
but more whole Bibles and more New
Testaments were seut out last year than
ever before in the society's history. Only
five years ago the total issues were a lit-
tle over 2,000,000 aud the average for
tw»nty-five years preceding was 1,500,000.
Nenrly one half of these volumes, or 2,327,-
390^ were sent out from the Bible House
in New York, which is an increase of
2*79,531 volumes over the preceding year.
*'1,923,780 volumes were issued by the
Society's agents abroad.
The total issues of the society in the
ninety-eight years amount to 103,519,891
volumes.
The majority of the volumes circulated
were printed at the Society Publishing
House in New York. However, branch
plants are maintained at Constantinople.
Beirut, Bangkok, Foochow, Shanghai and
Yokohoma.
Working under the direction of the
society translators are now putting the
Bible into the languages of the Navajo
Indians, Portuguese, Arab, Philippine aud
Zulu. In addition to this the Spanish and
the Korean versions are being revised.
METHOD OF DISTRIBUTION.
. The work of distribution is carried on
' through auxiliary organizations in eo-
' operation with the various missionary
i societies of the churches and the nine home
? agencies of the society working with all
5 agencies of distribution ami sending out its
own colporteurs. These colporteurs go into
the cities in the congested districts and
"circulate the Bible and portions of it
among the foreign elements. They also
work iu the rural dlistrlets. Last year, ac-
cording to the report, the circulation of
the home agencies alone amounted to
1,076,459 volumes, Which was au increase
over the preceding year of 2*0,282 volumes.
Abroad the society maintains twelve
agencies and makes direct grants of funds
and Scriptures to missionary societies and
other workers in j'Jelds where its regular
agencies have not been established, as in
Europe, Africa, an<1 in the islands of the
sea. The unusual circulation of the year
is in the Republic, of China, where 1,653,-
965 volumes were sent forth among the
people, an ad vane? over last year of 2K6,-
561 volumes. Iu Latin America there has
been a slight increase iu the circulation,
principally in Central America.
The agency among the colored people of
the South, under the charge of the Rev.
J. P. Wragg, D. D., has had a prosperous
year, achieving a. total circulation of 44,•
i>47 copies, of which 12,752 were Bibles,
10,444 Testament#; and 21,351 portions, a
total increase of 1,578 copies, of which only
a small portion were given away. Fifteen
colporteurs haw been employed for va-
rious purposes (three of them being young
women), and they visited 311 towns In the
St at ok of Virginia, West Virginia, North
and jjouth Carolina, Georgia, Alabama,
Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma,
Tennessee and Kentucky.

creased during the year $76,301.87.
Including the endowment, the Jonathan
Burr, and Alden funds for the blind, and
trusts held for auxiliaries, they now
amount to $2,461,652.77, from which the
income was $114,990.60, which is over 4^§
per cent.
In May, 1910, a hundred years of the
service of the American Bible Society will
be completed. A committee chosen by the
board of managers has been charged with
the preparation of a general plan for some
adequate celebration of this event In the
history of the society. It is expected that
representstlves of various National relig-
ious bodies will aid iu maturing these
plans. For the present all that can be
definitely said concerning the Centennial
Celebration is that it has been derided to
prepare a story of the work of the Bible
Society during the century, which will be,
in fact, a history of Its growth.
