Officers of the Commissary Department
of the army express doubt whether or
not the commissary cart will supplant
tiie fire less cooker for military purposes.
Kxperiments with the commissary cart
are now being conducted at Fort Riley,
Km nsas.
Reports from there indicate that the.
cart, while having merit, is regarded as
an addition to army transportation and
would require the services of a driver
and horse, and possibly two horses, Kor
this reason it is not likely to gain official
sanction.
On the other hand. the flreless cooker
furnishes hot food freshlv cooked to the
troops in the field and on the firing
line. hi addition, the troop? get the
variety of meats, vegetables and coffee.
Another essentia I feature of the flreless
cooker is that it can easily be placed in
the escort wagon, requiring but little
space.

The latest developments in the insur-
ance situation Tuesday were a declaration
on tiie part of Julius Oppenheimei a local
agent, that the insurance men will enjoin
the County Auditor from approving the
bill for the county insurance.
Julius Oppenheimer called 011 County
Auditor W. N. Wiggins Tuesday after-
noon and declared lie had not been given
sufficient opportunity to place his hid on
tiie insurance
He also said the bids had
been awarded with too much celerity, and
he questioned the right of the county
to keep secret tin* names of the com-
panies with which R. W. Lay. t.> whom
t!:<> bid was awarded, has placed the in-
surance.
Oppenheimer Says
Agents Will Act.
_Mr- Oppenheimer declaims that instead
"I paying $2062.50 for insurance for thro
v ars the county could accept his hid,
which he is ready to place, and receive
insurance for five years for $2235. Ho
demands that the county open bids again,
and says the local agents are ready to
act to force that action if it is legal.
Mr. Wiggins said the Commissioners
could no longer consider the matter,
since the, contract for the county insur-
ance was closed a week ago. and the
policies have been delivered and that it
is the agent's own fault if ids bid was not
placed in time.
Judge Green said the same and tells all
who inquire that so far as the county is
cineerned the insurance incident closed a
week ago when the policies were deliv-
ered.
Twenty Companies
Will Dividp Insurance.
The two hundred thousand dollars in-
surance on the court house will he divided
among twenty companies, and. though
the county has now closed it* contract
with R. W. Lay. he has not closed his
cotrac.ts with the other companies. The
• ounty officers are of the opinion if the
home agentr knew with which companies
he proposed placing 1 he, insurance they
would make an effort to prevent him
from so doing.
This, they think, was done twice he-
lore with thp other agents to whom con-
tracts were awarded, hut not closed.
County Auditor W. N. Wiggins says he
can see nothing wrong with lire insurance
contract thus far and will very likely
approve the warrants for the payment
of the premium, in case suit. Is brought
for an injunction it will he watched with
great interest by insurance men in ;U1
parts of the State.

"Grand! Beautiful!" were the com-

The electrical effects in the marvelous

spell bound. The wm'k presented in this
exhibition is new to the public and is
undoubtedly one of the most interesting
shows ever seen in San Antonio.
The lecture given by a lady of that
awful day on the Island of Martinique
in 1902 is historically correct and is alone
worth the price of admission.
The first scene is a beautiful one.
showing the harbor with its shipping,
the city and the mountains looming back

even to the rising of the moon, the
lighting up of the city, the steamers in

across the bay by a miniature sailor.
The actual eruption of the volcano and

being burned in the bay.

KILLING OF MISSIONARIES.
San Antonio Lady Receives Letter
from China Relating Tragedy.
A letter recently received by Mrs. C. S.
Bradley of this city from Mary Ridley,
a missionary in China, disclosed some of
the trials of the missionaries and some
of the dangers as well. The letter is
written from Wu-Chen and is dated
February IS, just after the uprising in
the capital of Kiang-si where a number
of mbsionark s were set upon hy the
natives and several seriously injured and
killed. The letter tells of the arrival of
survivors from the assault. The tales
that \v< re told are exceedingly touching
and induct- the hardships of the mis-
sionaries. The letter recites the incident
of the slaughter of the Kingham family
as follows:
"The movements of Mr. and Mrs. King-
ham will probably never be quite known
-whether they attempted to escape or
not before the mob came. Anvhow they
were_ beaten,- the father and mother and
Grade stripped an'd thrown into a pond.
Mrs. Kingham seems to have died
quickly. Mr, Kingham must have, strug-
gled out with (Jraeie for they were found
ill a lions.' a little way off in the direc-
tion of VIIfs Darr's. So far as she could
hear Mr. Kingham died there and the ,
little one. in whom there was still some
life, was rescued and taken to the steam-
ship."
