San Antonio was ouce famous for such
choice vegetables as celery, can lido wer
tomatoes, and okra. There are none of
these to be found now in market worth
mentioning. What is tbe matter.
Gkken cottN is now becoming plentiful
in the market, at plentiful prices; and
•oms of it eats like it is not so green after
■11. It has traveled, and seen something
of the world.
Horse back exercise seems now to be
the favorite recreation of gentlemen and
ladies in the afternoon. Tbe shady wind
ings of Flores street afford fine reaches for
the gallop. We saw a very fine rider in
an English young lady yesterday after-
noon.
* Travis Squark, one oi the must beautl
ful in the city, rejoiced a few days ago in
a Hne lot of young shade and ornamental
trees. We learn that they are now nearly
all destroyed. How was this done ? Who

er rather the ladies of the congregation,
give a splendid entertainmeut to-night,
(Tuesday) at the Menger Hotel, for tbe
benefit of the Chnrch. It will be a de-
lightful time, and those who do not go
will miss a rare treat.
Sam Antonio is the most cosmopolitan
and catholio spirited city to be fonnd in
Texas. We have all nationalities—Eng-
lish, Scotch, Irish, Germans, French, Ital-
ians, Spaniards, Mexicans, Scandinavians,
—Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Metho-
dists, Presbyterians, Baptists, and free
thinkers of all sorts. All get along har-
moniously.
By propkr attention to inigation, gar-
dens can be made to flourish here all the
year round. That greatest of physical
• blessings, good gardens in the late summer
and fall, is easily secured here.
Cheat anxOcty is felt in this city in
consequence of the rumor now prevalent
apon the streets that work upon the Gal-
veaton and San Antonio railroad has been
discontinued. Dispatches from Col. Feirre
are hourly expected, when we shall learu
the truth about the mattor. We trnst the
public fear is groundless.

Sciiicnck's Pulmonic Syrup, Ska
W«bd Tonic, and Mandrakk Piixs.—
These medicines have undoubtedly per-
formed more cures of Consumption than
any Other remedy knowu to the American
puplic. They are compounded of vege-
table ingredients, and coutaiu nothing
which can be injurious to tbe human cou
stitatiou, Other remedies advertised as
cures for Consumption, probably contaiu
opium, which is, a somewhat dangerous
drng iu all earns, and if taken freely by
consumptive patients, it must de great
injury; for its tendency is to confine the
morbid matter in tbe system, which, of
course, must make a cure impossible.
Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup is "warranted
not to contain a particle of opium: It is
composed of powerful but harmless herbs,
which act on .tbe lungs, liver, stomach,
and blood, and thns correct all morbid
secretions, and expel all tho. diseased
matter from the body. These are ihe only
means by which Consumption can be
cured, and as Scbenrk's Pulmonic Syrup,
Sea Weed Tonic, and Mandrake Pills are
the only medicines which operate iu this
way, it is obvious they are the only genu
ine cure for Pulmohary Consumption.
Each bottle of this invaluable medicuie is
accompanied by full directions. Dr.
Schenck is professionally at his principal
office, corner Sixth and Arch Streets,
Philadelphia, every Monday, where all
letters for advice must be addressed.

Iu dyspepsia the gastric juice which
should dissolve the food is only formed iu
small quantities, and whatever may be
the feeling of emptiness and weakness iu
suoh cases, tho dyspeptic should eat very
sparingly. To remedy the evil, the muc-
ous uiembraue of the stomach, which
secretes and emits the gastric fluid, should
be stimulated and toned, and the best in
fact the ouly sure preparation for this
purpose is Hoe tetter's Stomach Bitters.
Not only dooe this admirable stomachic
promote a suffl.-ient and steady supply of
the solvent which converts the food to
the purposes of life, but it also regnfates
tbe flow of bile, controls the bowels, and
has a most invigoratiug effect upon the
nerves. The glow which the very first
dose diffuses through the system is an
earnest of the more permanent vitalizing
effects wbifch are produced by its persis-
tent use. It improves tbe appetite, cheer*
the spirits, and renders the body hardy
and strong.
