;4kn\ Stkei..—Among the passengers on
the stace from Gonzales Thursday evening
•vas Adjutant-General Steel, who ha* come
to DeWitt county to investigate thorough-
ly tli« unhappy condition of things exist-
ing in this county. He has interviewed
the citvsens of this pluce, and will visit
Clinton and other parts of the connty, also
Victoria and Indiaiiola, to get a true ex-
pression of public opinion as regards the
remedy to he appl.eil to the case. We will
not pivoccupy the General's decision in
the matter, hilt present indications tend
vJ.o the assumption that State troops are to
lie stationed in this county to preserve the
Fjioace and assist the civil authorities in
entorciug the laws. Gen. Steel has made
a'favorable impression so far, and it is
generally ^restimid that he will pursue a
judicious and effectual course in the prem-
ises, although he will lie prevailed npou
in many instances by contrary, injudicious
and injurious councils. The people of
this county expect much good from the
General's mission, and they look to its
results with great solicitude.—Cuero Star.
Cotton Worm.—We have heard during
the week that the caterpillars had already
made their appearance in some sections of
the county. Farmers should use the cot-
Jon worm destroyer and provide in time
for Parrs Green, etc. The weather is
rather favorable for the growth of the
insects.—Cuero Star.
'I'm-: government will have to do some-
thing to preserve the administration
•liuilding and guard-house from being de-
stroyed by the river cutting away the
''uank -along the front. A little work
promptly done will save thousands of dol
'lavs to the government. Longer neglect
will insure loss, and the total destruction
•of the property fronting the river. The
"»ld Bravo has no respect for the persons
and property, and goes where it chooses if
siot eombatted.
Our farmers cannot complain of a want
of rain, for nearly every day for the past
two weeks refreshing showers have fallen
!iu different parts of the valley. We here
.ire getting mir share.
The grass out on the stock ranges is
r eported good. We have no doubt of it,
for there is very little stock left now to
'make grass scarce, owing to the benevo-
lence ef our Mexican neighbors, who re-
lieve the ranges from time to time of what
■Tltoy suppose to be surplus stock.—
Brownsville Sentinel.
The Comanche Chief., published in tho
'town of Comanche, '21st nit., says : The
troubles which have existed in our couuty
for some time seeim to have all passed
away, and the usual good order and quiet
■of the connty restored. Some of the reck-
less band have crossed the dark river
which seperates them l'rotn a reckless life
•iiere, and the mysteries of the great liere-
ifl.er ; others have been lodged in jail aud
still others have lied to parts unknown.
3ii justice to our section we should like
that parties at a distance, and especially
those contemplating a removal to this
ucotiod, should understand that the par
•ties who have been depredating in this
section do not live here, aud consequently
it was more accidental than otherwise
that the difficulties occurred at this place.
Previous to this attair no county in the
•State could show a clearer record for law ;
•and order than ours. By a determined ;
aftort of the citizens the power of despeia- !
doism has been broken, peace and order
restored, and the prompt united etforts of
the people will insure this happy state of
affairs ill the future.
Srif Deft'iici'.
To a criminal neglect of preventive
medication may be. ascribed a majority of
the ailments which affect humanity. It is
a well ascertained t^ct, resting dn the
experience of twe nty years, that a course
of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters will put.
even a naturally feeble system in such a
state of defence that it will be competent
to resist the most prevalent causes of dis-
ease, such as the malign influence of mias-
ma, unwholesome water, excessive heat,
damp, cold, sudden changes of tempera-
ture, &,c. Yet there are thousands of per-
sons living iu perpetual peril from one or
more of these causes, who recklessly omit
to avail themselves of the absolute pro-
tection which this famous vegetable anti-
dote affords. Intermittent and bilious
remittent fevers, rheumatism, general de-
bility, nervous weakness aud iri cgula-iities
of the stomach, bowels aud liver, would
be comparatively unknown if this palata
ble specific were in universal use in the
districts where they principally prevail.

Dit. Schkxck's Pulmonic Syuup, Ska
M'utsu Tonic, and Mandrakk Pii.i.n.—
'These medicines have undoubtedly per-
formed more cures of Consumption than
-.toy oilier remedy known to the American
public. They are compounded of vege-
table ingredients, and contain nothing
which can lie injurious to the human eon
stitiltion. Other remedies advertised as
•ourea for Consumption, prohahly contain
opium, which is a somewhat dangerous
drug iu all cases, and if taken freely by
•consumptive patients, it must do great,
iiy-ury ; for its tendency is to confine the
uiorbid matter in the system, which, of
course, must make a cure impossible.
Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup is warranted
not to contain a particle of opium: It is
composed of powerful but harmless herbs,
which act 011 the lungs, liver, stomach,
lud blood, and thus correct ail morbid
•secretions, and expel all the diseased
matter from the body. These are ;he only
means by which Consumption can be
•oured, aud as Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup,
-Sea Weed Tonic, and Mandrake Pills are
The only medicines which operate in this
way, it is obvious they are the only genu
'"lie core for Pulmonary Consumption.
•Kacli bottle of this invaluable medicine is
accompanied by full directions. Dr.
Sclienck is professionally at his principal
office, corner Sixth and Arch Streets,

letters for advice must be addressed.
