The Happy Mind.
Out upon the calf, I say,
Who turns his grumbling head away,
And quarrels with his feed of hay,
Because it is not clover.
Give to me the happy mind,
That will forever seek and find
Something fair and something kind,
All the wide world over.
JTis passing good to have an eye
That always manages to spy
Some star to bear it company,
Though planets may be hidden.
And Mrs. Eve was foolish, very,
Not to be well content and merry,
With peach, plum, melon, grape and cherry,
When apples were forbidden.
We love rare flowers, but suppose
We're far from Italy's fresh rose—
Must we then turn up our nose
At lillies of the valley ?
Can't we snuff at something sweet,
In the "bough-posts" that we meet.
Cried and sold in city street,
By "Sally in our Alley?"
• rive me the heart that spreads its wings,
Like the free bird that soars and .'ings,
And sees the bright side of all things,
From Behring's Straits to Dover.
It is u bank that never breaks,
It is a store thief never takes,
It is a rock that never shakes,
All the wide world over.
We lilce to give old Care the slip.
And listen to the "crank and quip,"
At Social board, from fluent lip—
No fellowship is better;
But lie must lack the gentle grace
That marks the best of human race.
Who cannot see a friendly face
In mastiff, hound or setter.
Our hungry eyes may fondly wish
To revel amidst flesh or fish,
And gloat upon the silver dish,
That holds a golden plover j
Yet if cur table be but spread
With savory cheese and oaten bread,
Be thankful if we're always fed
As well, the wide world over
V\ ' may p»oier ll; ';ia i nt 'c:-. j .
Or choose lire melody thai floats
About the gay Yenitian boats,-
Hall .wild in ir eitaUing;
But un-.y music ma} be found
\\ ban some rough native harp unbound
Strikes up, li!'e cherries -(round and sound."
With English foi-de-rollinsr.
We :.<ay be.poor-—bid then, I 'goes-.
Our trouble u ith our pomp is less.
For they who wear a r usset dress
May never fear the rumpling'

Between our fingers and our thumb*,
| North Carolina is one of the common
; household ; she is not anxious to take of-
! fcnco from any one of her family; she
can understand a joke among her friends.
She has received the name of Rip Van
Winkle, and it is a very appropriate so-
briquet, for Rip Van Winkle was Dutch,
f,nd Carolina contains her due proportion
of the descendants of that hardy race.—
She may sleep, but it is with her eye
open ! She was wide awake May 19,
1775 ; she was wide awake July 4, 1776;
she was wide awake when she made the
first geological survey ever made in this
nation ; she was wide awake when she j
gave the order to Canova for the statue j
C !
of the father of his country ; and she has j
been wide awake in saving her money.— j
She lias never had occasion to give her
promissory note. Who would have
thought that with all her sleepiness, she
was so provident ? Ladies and gentle-
men, this is a picture of Kip A an W in-
kle ! how do you like it ?

Mr. George Law of New York, hav-
ing of late caused some noise in the
world, the Boston Ilerald gives the fol-
lowing facts in relation to his present po-
sition, his appearance and his antece-
dents 3
Mr. Law was originally a journeyman
stonemason, and in the opinion of lii,- then
associates, his ambition ran no higher than
to do a fair day's work for a fair day's
wages. They were deceived. Those
Bostonians who have visited New York
cannot fail to Remember that triumph of
American mechanics, the high bridge over
the llarlem river. The bridge was the
keystone over which Law built his fame
and fortune. In 1S38, he contracted to
build a section of it, and cleared $40,000
by the operation. Since that time his
course has been onward ; stern, unwaver-
ing, and at times 'morose, he never fails to
meet his engagements, and can command
capital to the amount of ^5,000,000. Tie

with emphasis on the assertions that the
hrst English colony in America w-is plan-
t d or. the shores of North Carolina ; that
the first battle of the revolutionary war
was fought in that State; and that the
first (Lelaraticn f independence fVom the
Hri i-U . government was promulgated
tli>r no; e than a year before the decla-
v . by Congress in 1776. In conclu-
sion, the lecturer eulogised North Ca-
rolina's constancy and devotion to the
Union:
During the revolutionary struggle, her
cry was, "We fight not for a section, but
for the whole country." It is a task full
of interest to turn over the pages of
these times. Tell your children to re-
member those days. Look back and see
how the men of that time clung together.
Boston was in trouble in 1774; but did
no one sympathise with her ? North
Carolina, at great expense and risk, sent
a vessel loaded with provisions to her suf-
fering sisters. I behold here to-night an
audience composed of members, perhaps
of every State in the 1'nion. In your
veins flows the blood of the men who
fought side by side in the revolution. I
tender you my hand ; will you accept
it ? "Yes," you say ; "we are the chil-
dren of one great household." And
what should be your conduct as members
of that great household ? o phonld es-
en-i.-e mutual forbearance and love, with
a common resistance to those enemies vho
