fiocaiioa of I bo Weilti* Penitentiary
In view of tho general belief that the
VVestorn Peuitenteiitiary will he located
at or near San Antonio, there is consider-
able interest felt in this community as to
the choice of a proper Bitu. There are two
ela:es of pooplo who feel a deep interest
in this matter. One is composed of those
who own land Which they desire to soil to
tho State at a good price, — at a consider-
able advanco on what the property oost
them. This iB only natural. A man> Vi
aion is keener where his interests are con-
cerned than anywhere else, howover much
fiiis Judgment may be distorted. Another
dais It composed of those who are anx-
ious that the institution shall ho made a
success, an honor to San Antonio, to Wost
Texas, and to the State, llonco they are
anxious that no mistake should be niado
iu the choice of a sito for it. We, iu coui-
jnou with the massoBOt our follow-citlzons
who have no axos to grind, take this lat
ter view of the case.
In the first place, plenty ot land should
be obtained now, while it is comparative-
ly cheap. Within ft very few years lands
in a fow miles of San Antonio will cost
ten or twenty times what it will cost now,
aud should more laud be needed after
some years, the State cannot obtain it ex.
cept at an exorbitant price. Let as large
a body of laud as possible be secured now,
so that there will bo no danger of being
straightened for room, and, if not uoeded
in future years, it will bo much better for
£he State to sell than to buy.
The Penitentiary should be located on
high ground, beyond all possibility of over-
How. It should be located on that sido ot
the river whore the bank and adjacent
grounds are high. Other thiugs being
equal, tho Western bank would be proftr-
iible, as tho bulk of the territory to bo re-
presented by tho institution lies West of
.Wan Antonio. The water necessary cau bo
.carried to any desirable point by ditches,
if the site ebooseu has a sullicient fall of
water. If practicable, the very best water
power on the river near the city should
be included in the tract puruhased.
We understand that several sites have
been ottered to the Commissioners, aud we
propose to give the merits of each one, ac-
cording to our best judgment, from the
best information we cau gain.
And, first, we shall mention the traot
owned by the "Liebig Meat Extract Com-
pany." This place was chosen as the best
place for a largo manufacturing interest,
and the same good judgment was exorcised
that is neoessary in the choice of a sito for
the Ponitentiary. It is six miles from the
.city, aud contains over six hundred acres
of /.and. The situation is high, above all
4aag*r of ovortlow, tho land is of excel-
iewt rfjAi&lity, and therk is plenty of tiinbor
ail the bottom. From what we can learn
'the water-pover at this place cannot bo
excelled on tuty part of the river near San
Antonio. A large ditch leaves tho river
just above the building* by which snOici-
eut water, with sufficient fall, can 1>» ob-
tained to run any amount of machinery.
The buildings anil machinery on the place
are valuable, and woaid be of groat use
in an early eou'raencement of the Peniten-
tiary.
The main building is 74 feet long, 54
feet wide, two stories high, built of hard
•tone, aud eovered with an iron fire-proef
roof. There is a seven-liorse-power en-
gine, with all the necessary machinery to
<lo any aiuouut of manufacturing. Thore
i« a soap factory attached which has a
capacity for turning out from lOUO to 1500
pounds of soap a day. This is a branch of
industry well suited to a Western Peniten-
tiary, located in the midst of au immense
eattle region, anil also abouuding in hogs.
This traet of land, with all tho improve-
ment! on it, cau its purchased,, we under-
stand, for much law than the original
cost, notwithstanding the prospects of the
city have vastly improved since the pur-
chase was made.
[n our next we shall notioe some of tho
otlior sites whioh are spoken of as suitable
for the Penitentiary. Even should. San
Antonio iie chosen as the location, the
Commissioners should not be in too great
haste to ohoose the precise situation. They
should have tim to Make a deliberate aud
iu4tetov« «*l»«Uen.
The Dramatic Club Last Kioht at titk
Alamo Literary Hall.—Tho comedy
of "Lend me Five Shillings,'J anil tho farce
"A Sea of Troubles," drew a orowded
house last night, and the andienoe wae
composed of people before whom any com-
pany might he proud to appear. The at-
tention and interest with whioh the per-
formance was witnessed wa8 maintained
from the beginning to the close, and at
times tlie merriment and applause were
uproarious. To the more thinking aud
eritioal part of the audience the play was
not so interesting as the "Serious Family",
bnt that was the fault of the play, and
not of the performers. They all sustained
their parts admirably, showing full appre-
ciation of the characters they represented,
and careful study and training. And here
we feel bound to say that, whereas, wo
have heretofore lectured the ladies for
not speaking loud enough, and not articu-
luting with sufficient distinctness, we
must now acquit them of that chargo, so
far as last night was ooneerned. All of
them were heard distinctly, in all parts
of the house, in both plays. Not so some
of the gentlemen, and we hope that they
will not have to be reminded of it again.
A failure in thia respect is to be expected
of ladies, bat is inexcusablo iu gentlemen.
The playing of the ladies last night was
■uperb. In tho comedy, Miss K. and Miss
■T. met every requirement, and so did Miss
R. in the farce. But they were all three
so beautiful that they won tho hearts of
the audienoe at once, and there was little
chance of severe criticism, had they de-
served it.
The gentlemen all did well, exceedingly
well, in their parts, with the exception
above named for oifo or two of them. "Mr
Golightly and Capt. Phobbs", in the play,
and "Godolphus Gout" "Hiram Orcutt",
"Robert", aud "Thingamy", in tho farce
were especially fine. "Jenny',, in the fierce
cannot easily bo surpassed.

Iioi at Manor.
On Monday night, about 9 o'olock, a Mr.
Baker, a saloon-keepor, was shot at Manor
Station by a man who called himself
Thompson, aud who boasted that he was
one of Quantroll's guerrillas, and that be
had killed live or six men. Thompson had.
abused Baker at tho saloon several times
during the day, and threatened to kill
him that night, beoause Baker asked him
to pay fifty cents he owed the bar for
drinks. And, to be as good as his word,
ou meeting Baker at night ho renewed the
quarrel, gave tho lie, and receiving it
back, instantly fired, the ball taking eft'ect
in Baker's stomach. Several doctors were
at once called, but at a late hour his life
was despaired of. Thompson, immediate-
ly after the shooting, left for oamp, where
ho aud his party had several horses graz-
ing, and it is supposed decamped, Thomp-
son is said to bo a man of light complex-
ion, six feet high, aboat twenty-seven
years old, and lias a turnedup nose with
prominent nostrils. His right upper lip
