Wendbi.l Phillips, in a speech
atFanueil Hall, Boston, lately, said
that the three great problems
civilization is called upon to con-
sider are poverty, disease and crime.
The fact that three fourths of tho
disease and more than one halt of
the crime were among the poorer
classes shows how closely connec-
ted the three problems are. The
man who had once commited crime
is never believed again, and wheu
he is consequently driven to criino
once more, he is not to blame, but
the Church aud State, that have
never held ont their hands to help
him. There is not a city in the
laud but that is to a great extent
governed by its criminal classes.
Iu tho recent Cabinet consultation
in relation to the Federal officials
in Texas the New York Heralds
correspondent reports that tho Pres-

intimate acquaintance with hitu had
convinced the President of the error
had made iu appointing him.
Ir had been represented that if u

Richmond, Va. , October 27.—
Hon. It. M. T. Hunter delivered an
address before the annual meeting
of the Southern Historical Society
to-night. It was an able vindica-
tion of tHe importance of writing
a faithful history of the late strug
gle between the states. He gave a
brief summary of the causes and
chief events of the war, showing
that the Confederacy'has a history
which sheds luster not only on tho
South, but on the whole country,
North as well as South.

The individual may bn said to court
diNease who exposes himself to tk<) mias-
matic influences which give rise to chills
and fever aud other malarious epidemics
aud endemics, without previously fortify-
ing his system a^itinst their insidious at
tacks by the use of a protect ive medicinal
agent. The hardiest constitution is by no
means*proof against such maladies, lunch
less one naturally weak or bilious, or the
antagonistic power of which is l**Nseu«*d by
an liTfpular habit of body. Tin* inhabi-

Grateful Thousands proclaim
Vinegar Bitters the most wonder-
ful Invigorant that ever sustained
tho sinking system.
No Person can take these Bit.
ters according to directions, and re-
main long unwell, provided their
bones are not destroyed by mineral
poison or other means, and vital or-
gans wasted beyond ropair.
Bilious, Remittent, and In-
termittent Fevers, which aro so
prevalent in the valleys of our great
rivers throughout tho United States,
especially thoso of tho Mississippi,
Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tenuossee,
Cumberland, Arkansas, Red, Colo-
rado, Brazos, Rio Grande, Pearl,
Alabama, Mobile, Savannah, Ro-
anoke, James, and many others,
with their vast tributaries, through-
out our entiro country during the
Summer and Autumn, and remarka-
bly so during seasons of unusual
heat and dryness, aro invariably ac-
companied by extensivo derange-
ments of tho stomach aud livor, and
othor abdominal viscera. In' their
treatment, a purgative, exerting a
poworful inlluenco upon theso vari-
ous organs, is essentially necossary.
Thero is no cathartic for tho purposo
equal to Dr. J. Walker's Vinegar
Bitters, as tlioy will speedily remove
tho dark-colored viscid matter with which
tho bowels are loaded, at tho same time
stimulating tho secretions of tho liver,
and generally restoring tho healthy func-
tions of tho digestive organs.
Fortify the body against dis-
ease by purifying all its fluids with
Vinegar Hitters. No epidemic can
take hold of a system thus fore-aruied.
Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Read-
ache, Pam iu tho Shoulders, Coughs,
Tightness of tho Chest, Dizziness, Sour
Eructations of tho Stomach, Bad Taste
in tho Mouth, Bilious Attacks, Palpita-
tion of tho Heart, Inflammation of the
Lungs, Pain in tho region of tho Kidneys,
aud a hundred other painful symptoms,
aro tho oll'springs of Dyspepsia. One bot-
tlo will provo a better guaranteo of its
merits than a lengthy advertisement.
Scrofula, or King's Evil, White
Swollings, Ulcers, Erysipelas, Swelled
Neck, Goitre, Scrofulous Inflammations,
Indolent Inflammations, Mercurial affec-
tions, Old Sores, Eruptions of tho Skiu,
Sore Eyes, etc. Iu those, as iu all other
constitutional Diseases, Walker's Vis-
koa r Bitters liavo showu thoir great cur-
ative powers in tho most obstiuato and
intractable cases.
For Inflammatory and Chronic
Rheumatism,Gout, Bilious, Remit-
tent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases
of tho Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder,
these Bitters have no equal. Such Dis-
eases are caused by Vitiated Blood.
Mechanical Diseases.—Persons
engaged in Paints aud Minerals, such as
Plumbers, Type-setters, Gold-boaters and
Miners, as they advanco in life, aro sub-
ject to paralysis of tho Bowels. To guard
against this, tako a doso of Walker's
V iifeqaii Bitters occasionally.
For Skin Diseases, Eruptions,
Tetter, Salt-Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pim-
ples, Pustules, Boils, Carbuucfes, Ring-
worms, Scald-head, Soro Eyes, Erysipe-
las, Itch, Scurfs, Discoloration^ of the
Skin, Rumors and Diseases of the Skin of
whatever name or nature, are literally
dug up and carried out of tho system in a
short time by tho uso of theso Bitters.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms,
lurking in the system of so many thou-
sands, are effectually destroyed and re-
moved. No system of medicine, no Ver-
mifuges, no anthelmintics will free the
svstem from worms liko theso Bittors.
For Female Complaints, in young
or old, 'married or single, at tho dawn of
womanhood, ortho turn of life, theso Ton-
ic Bitters display 60 decided an influence
that improvement is soon perceptible.
Cleanse tho Vitiated Blood
whenever you lind its impurities bursting
through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions,
or Sores; cleanse it when you find it ob-
structed and slug»rt>h in tho veins; cleanse
it when it is foul; your feelings will tell
you when. Keep tho blood pure, and the
health of the svstem will follow.
