COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
is designed to assist in preparing students to fill the position of
part time counsellor in the junior or senior high school. It will
also enable the regular classroom teacher to better adapt the
work to the needs of the pupils. Means of discovering the abilities,
interests, and aptitudes of the pupils, agencies through
which guidance may be given, and the qualifications of the high
school counsellor will be stressed. Winter term.
381.-Measurement in Secondary Education. In this course
standardized intelligence and educational tests that may be used
in the high school will be studied and evaluated. The student
will be trained in giving, scoring, and in interpreting the results
of tests in specific high school subjects. The probable error
concept is given special attention. Advised prerequisite: Education
380. Spring term.
GENERAL COURSES
380.-Elementary Statistical Methods. This course will acquaint
the student with the methods of dealing quantitatively
with educational and economic data. It will give training in
tabulation, graphic presentation, and in the calculation of such
measures as averages, variability, and correlation. Educational
tests will be used freely in providing illustrative material. Fall
term.
385.-General History of Education. The purpose of this
course is to acquaint the student with the sources of our
present western civilization. The material used covers the
ancient and medieval period in educational development. Much
attention will be given to the school as a social institution and
its relation to other social institutions. There will be class discussions,
lectures, and oral reports. Pre-requisite: Junior standing.386.-The History of Education. This is a continuation
of Education 385. Beginning with the modern movements
in educational history about 1750 this course follows the
current of school development from church control to state control.
While it is called "History of Education" it is not a mere
studying of a succession of events, but is a study of educational
movements and the reasons for them. The systems of various
nations are studied and compared. Lectures, oral reports on assigned
topics, and parallel readings. Texts, "The History of Education",
